Abstract Background Grading of equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is undertaken in clinical and research settings, but the reliability EGUS grading systems poorly understood. Hypothesis/Objectives Investigate interobserver intraobserver an established ordinal system a novel visual analog scale (VAS), assess influence observer experience. Animals Sixty deidentified gastroscopy videos. Methods Six observers (3 specialists 3 residents) graded videos using Council (EGUC) VAS. Observers three...
Abstract Background Omeprazole preparations vary in bioavailability horses. Hypothesis/Objectives To characterize the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of an existing enteric‐coated oral omeprazole paste (REF) a novel, in‐feed, dry granule preparation (NOV). Animals Twelve Standardbred/Thoroughbred mares free from clinical disease. Methods A prospective, blinded randomized interventional study was trial, conducted 3 parts: (a) study, (b) dose titration (c) comparative pharmacodynamic...
Abstract Background Right dorsal colitis (RDC) is a nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drug (NSAID) induced, protein losing enteropathy in horses associated with high case fatality rate. Objectives To describe signalment, NSAID usage, clinical presentations, pathology, ultrasonographic findings, treatments, outcomes, and factors survival diagnosed RDC. Animals Thirty‐five from 7 Australian equine hospitals Methods Retrospective series. Clinical records of cases were accepted if definitively or...
Abstract Background Intragastric pH profiles of neonatal foals admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) remain poorly characterized. Hypothesis/Objectives To determine intragastric and clinical parameters associated with in ICU. Animals Forty‐two ICU requiring placement an indwelling nasogastric tube for nutritional management were included. Methods was measured 24 hours from time admission. Mean pH, % <4, >4 determined each foal. History, findings, clinicopathological data recorded...
Abstract Background Current methods to measure intragastric pH in horses have limitations. A wireless capsule has been designed for continuous esophageal monitoring humans. Objectives To (1) determine the feasibility and describe methodology of measuring wirelessly horses; (2) attachment duration capsules. Animals Eleven healthy adult horses. Methods Capsules were attached squamous glandular gastric mucosa under gastroscopic guidance, using suture loops 1 4 hemostasis clips. was continuously...
Summary Tumours of vascular origin are uncommon in horses. This report describes the surgical treatment a large subcutaneous tumour Quarter Horse colt. The histopathological appearance mass was most consistent with haemangioma. While these neoplasms often difficult to characterise, it has been suggested that there is continuum types some cases falling between categories. Further classification tumours requires special stains and immunohistochemical techniques.
