The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) is used globally for both high and low stakes assessment. Despite its extensive use, very few published articles provide a set of best practices developing an OSCE, those that do, none apply modern understanding validity. This article provides 12 tips OSCE guided by Kane’s validity framework to ensure the assessing what it purports measure. are presented in order they would be operationalized during development.

Context The shift from a time-based to competency-based framework in medical education has created need for frequent formative assessments. Many educational programmes use some form of written progress test identify areas strength and weakness promote continuous improvement their learners. However, the role performance-based assessments, such as objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), testing remains unclear. With the recent interest in competency-based education, educators are being challenged to develop more assessment opportunities. As such, there is increased demand for exam content development, which can be a very labor-intense process. An innovative solution this challenge has been use of automatic item generation (AIG) multiple-choice questions (MCQs). In AIG, computer technology used generate test items from cognitive models (i.e. representations knowledge and skills that required solve...

CONSTRUCT: Automatic item generation (AIG) is an alternative method for producing large numbers of test items that integrate cognitive modeling with computer technology to systematically generate multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The purpose our study describe and validate a generating plausible but incorrect distractors. Initial applications AIG demonstrated its effectiveness in items. However, expert review the initial identified key limitation where implausible options, or distractors,...

Introduction: Although several studies have explored the relationship between learning and written tests, little is understood about how performance-based examinations influence learning. Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the quality multiple choice questions (MCQs) developed using automated item generation (AIG) versus traditional methods, as judged by a panel experts. MCQs two methods (i.e., AIG or traditional) evaluated content experts in blinded study. Participants rated total 102 six metrics and made judgment regarding whether not each tested recall application knowledge. A Wilcoxon two-sample test differences rating scales well an overall cognitive...
