Road dust from the Point Lisas Industrial Estate in Trinidad, West Indies was investigated to determine its heavy metal content and associated health risks. The average concentrations of Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb Zn were 3.44, 37.69, 58.16, 770.69, 35.61, 68.50 342.53 μg/g, respectively. risks due exposure metals road assessed based on US EPA's Health Risk Assessment Model for both carcinogenic non-carcinogenic effects. risk assessment indicated that ingestion pathway main route dust; however,...
Road dust in an industrial estate could potentially contain toxic heavy metals as a result of various anthropogenic sources. This study investigated sixteen samples from locations throughout the Point Lisas Industrial Estate Trinidad, West Indies. Samples were acid-digested and analysed by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy, which revealed that concentrations for Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb Zn ranged 2.48–5.45 μg/g, 14.2–70.5 15.3–130 219–1330 20.0–62.1 43.5–113 μg/g 105–1154 respectively....
Sixty-four and fifty-six road dust samples were collected over two seasons from various locations throughout the island of Trinidad analyzed for 16 priority PAHs. Total PAH concentrations ranged 21 ng g−1 to 4723 (d.w.) rainy season 36 2428 dry season. The Σ4–6 ring PAHs accounted 88% 63% in seasons, respectively. diagnostic ratios, principal component analysis, cluster analysis revealed both pyrogenic petrogenic sources with major contributions vehicular emissions. Contributions incomplete...
Callosobruchus maculatus (F.), a major pest of grain legumes, causes considerable losses worldwide. C. management relies on synthetic insecticides with their adverse environmental and health concerns. The current study investigated the use Artocarpus altilis (breadfruit) extracts contact fumigant toxicity, repellency oviposition deterrency as strategy. Fumigant mortality (LC50) dry inflorescence extract A. was 126.65 µL L−1 air at 53.4 h. Fruit gave 73.3% 1000 ppm after 24 Percent dose time...
The present study reports the first phytochemical investigation of seed kernels Manilkara bidentata (Balata) harvested in Trinidad, W.I. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol extracts showed a total 39 components. 2,6,10,14,18-pentamethyl-2,6,10,14,18-eicosapentaene (74.93%), 9-octadecenoic acid, (Z)- 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester (79.98%), (Z)-ethyl oleate (92.75%), Z,E-2-methyl-3,13-octadecadien-1-ol (80.51%)...
Within recent times, heavy metal contamination in rice (Oryza Sativa) has been of growing concern particularly due to its implications on human health via consumption. Twenty-one different brands marketed Trinidad and Tobago were investigated for their content (Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb Zn) using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. Lead was not detected any the samples, while both Cadmium Nickel only one sample each at 0.27 1.79 µg/g, respectively. The average concentrations decreased...
Peganum harmala L., Zygophyllaceae popularly known as Wild Syrian rue, a well-known plant in folk medicine for many pharmacological uses including antispasmodic activity. Chemical composition of the showed that most important constituents this are betacarboline alkaloids such harmalol, harmaline, and harmine. In work, we aimed to evaluate effects these three major on induced rat ileum contractions, by acetylcholine, BaCl2 KCl. Of alkaloids, harmalol harmaline produced concentration-dependent...
Residual floor dust at an indoor firing range was investigated for the presence of selected heavy metals, and associated health risks (non-carcinogenic carcinogenic) were explored. Average metal concentrations decreased in following order: Pb >> Cu Zn > Mn Cr Ni Cd. For examined dust, moderate to significant degrees enrichment observed Ni, Cd, while extremely high reported Pb. Lead only that exceeded Hazard Index value 1 potential carcinogenic Cd considered acceptable. A risk existed Cr, as...
The presence of metals in an aquatic environment can serve as a biomarker for pollution and be used to evaluate its contamination status. Rapid industrialisation recent decades has propelled Trinidad Tobago one the most developed nations within Caribbean region stimulated awareness potential ecological risks from various industrial activities affecting rivers Trinidad. Sediment samples three along West coast were analysed Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb Zn. For all rivers, metal concentrations...
The increase in urbanisation and industrialisation have contributed significantly to elevated concentrations of heavy metals soils. eventual uptake by agronomic crops could potentially affect human health based on consumption patterns various regions the globe. This study investigated potential risks consumers dried legumes a small island developing state that rely primarily importation those from major producers. Several varieties were analysed for selected which Cd Pb not detected Cr was...
A major contributor of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in road dust is vehicular emissions from gasoline- and diesel-powered engines. In this study, the modelling relations between PAH concentrations traffic counts over two climatic seasons were explored using global ordinary least squares (OLS) local geographically weighted regression (GWR) models. For various roadways investigated, performance GWR models showed great improvements OLS as denoted by comparisons coefficients...
This is the first report of a Clusia species assessment for Callosobruchus maculatus management and provides reference information future research. n-Hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate methanol extracts from fruits leaves palmicida were evaluated at 1000, 500, 250, 125 62.5 ppm contact mortality oviposition deterrent activities against C. adults infesting dried Cajanus cajan seeds. Ethyl leaf extract was most toxic (LC50 = 1289.74 ppm) corresponding median lethal time (LT50) 64.89 h, while...
