BackgroundInappropriate antibiotic use for acute respiratory tract infections is common in primary health care, but distinguishing serious from self-limiting difficult, particularly low-resource settings. We assessed whether C-reactive protein point-of-care testing can safely reduce patients with non-severe Vietnam.MethodWe did a multicentre open-label randomised controlled trial ten health-care centres northern Vietnam. Patients aged 1–65 years at least one focal and systemic symptom of...

Background The relationships between the infecting dengue serotype, primary and secondary infection, viremia severity remain unclear. This cross-sectional study examined these interactions in adult patients hospitalized with Ha Noi. Methods Findings 158 were enrolled September 16 November 11, 2008. Quantitative RT-PCR, serology NS1 detection used to confirm determine serotype plasma viral RNA concentration, categorize infections as or secondary. 130 (82%) laboratory confirmed. Serology was...

Objectives To determine prospectively the causative pathogens of central nervous system (CNS) infections in patients admitted to a tertiary referral hospital Hanoi, Vietnam. Methods From May 2007 December 2008, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 352 adults with suspected meningitis or encephalitis underwent routine testing, staining (Gram, Ziehl-Nielsen, India ink), bacterial culture and polymerase chain reaction targeting Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, S. suis,...

Abstract Aim We assess the cost-benefit implications of C-reactive protein (CRP) testing in reducing antibiotic prescription for acute respiratory infection Viet Nam by comparing incremental costs CRP with economic antimicrobial resistance averted due to lower prescribing. Findings Patients group and controls incurred similar managing their illness, excluding quantitative tests, provided free charge trial context. Assuming a unit cost $1 per test, was $0.93 patient. Based on previous...

Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) has been scaled up significantly in recent years. This study aimed to investigate the pattern of polysubstance use 395 MMT patients and its contextualized associated factors. A cross-sectional was performed three outpatient clinics Nam Dinh Province. Multivariate Poisson regression used identify factors with status. The mean duration current dose 3.3 years 69.2 mg, respectively. Among participants, 24.8% reported daily alcohol use, 68.6% smoked...

Knowledge of adult dengue virus (DENV) infection from Hanoi, Vietnam, is limited. In 2008, we prospectively studied 143 (77 male) confirmed (nonstructural 1 antigen enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay [ELISA], DENV polymerase chain reaction, paired serology) patients median age 23.5 (range 16–72) years. They were admitted to the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases, on illness day (D) 5 1–8). By D8, 141 (98.6%) afebrile. Platelet counts and hematocrit (median, interquartile range [IQR])...
