We document chemical laboratory procedures and results on international comparison samples at the Hertelendi Laboratory of Environmental Studies, Debrecen, Hungary. also show using new MICADAS system compare these to internationally recognized standards blank materials. The newly developed sample preparation in HEKAL can handle as 1) organic material, 2) cellulose fraction plant, 3) bones, 4) carbonate shell, 5) dissolved inorganic carbon groundwater. radiocarbon measurements intercomparison...

A more developed and modern technology replaced the old radiocarbon measuring methods in Hungary, based on isotope separation by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) not activity measurements. In summer 2011, EnvironMICADAS was successfully installed Laboratory of HEKAL, Debrecen, Hungary. this project, a multipurpose gas-handling system for gas ion source at ETH Zürich, designed measurement small environmental origin samples (<50 μg carbon) with moderate precision requirements. The...

Significance Atmospheric dust is a major component of climate change. However, the relationship between glacial continental activity and abrupt centennial–millennial-scale changes North Atlantic poorly known. Recent advances in high-precision radiocarbon dating small gastropods loess deposits provide an opportunity to gain unprecedented insights into variations its drivers at centennial–millennial scales from near-source archive. Here, we show that Late Quaternary temperature dustiness...

Ecosystems that offer carbon sequestration by leaching bicarbonate to groundwater are valuable natural capital. One region may this service is the west coast of South Africa. Over 20 % covered soil mounds ("heuweltjies") up 40 m diameter, 2 high, inhabited southern harvester termite Microhodotermes viator and enriched in organic inorganic soluble minerals. We aimed generate radiogenic stable isotope data for soils a where these absent, 1) verify atmosphere-soil-groundwater link, 2) resolve...

Abstract. An intensive aerosol measurement and sample collection campaign was conducted in central Budapest a mild winter for 2 weeks. The online instruments included an FDMS-TEOM, RT-OC/EC analyser, DMPS, gas pollutant analysers meteorological sensors. samples were collected on quartz fibre filters by low-volume sampler using the tandem filter method. Elemental carbon (EC), organic (OC), levoglucosan, mannosan, galactosan, arabitol mannitol determined, radiocarbon analysis performed...

ABSTRACT Today, accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technology enables us to carry out very precise measurements of radiocarbon ( 14 C). Unfortunately, due fluctuations in the C calibration curve, resulting calibrated time intervals vary from decades up centuries age. Within a scale several decades, we can find on curve which correspond with periods rapid increases atmospheric CO 2 activity. Some these “high slope” parts could be used for fine resolution dating individual samples....

In this study, we report 21 ancient shotgun genomes from present-day Western Hungary, previously understudied Late Copper Age Baden, and Bronze Somogyvár-Vinkovci, Kisapostag, Encrusted Pottery archeological cultures (3,530-1,620 cal Bce). Our results indicate the presence of high steppe ancestry in Somogyvár-Vinkovci culture. They were then replaced by Kisapostag group, who exhibit an outstandingly (up to ∼47%) Mesolithic hunter-gatherer ancestry, despite component being thought be highly...

In order to use speleothems in the reconstruction of past climate and environmental changes it is necessary understand hydrological processes that determine physico-chemical conditions carbonate precipitation hence speleothem formation. Therefore, this study an extended monitoring program was conducted Béke Baradla caves located Aggtelek region (Northeastern Hungary). The studied are rich flowstone occurrences with great potential for paleoclimatology studies. activity included measurements...
