The mechanisms underlying cystic fibrosis (CF) lung disease pathogenesis are unknown. To establish linking anion transport with the functional microanatomy, we evaluated normal and CF piglet trachea as well adult swine in presence of selective inhibitors. We investigated airway microanatomy using microoptical coherence tomography, a new imaging modality that concurrently quantifies multiple parameters epithelium colocalized fashion.Tracheal explants from wild-type demonstrated direct link...
Noncompressible torso hemorrhage is a leading cause of death in trauma, with many patients dying before definitive control. Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion the aorta (REBOA) an adjunct than can be used to expand window salvage end-stage hemorrhagic shock. The aim this study was evaluate effect continuous and intermittent REBOA (iREBOA) on mortality using highly lethal porcine model noncompressible hemorrhage. Male splenectomized pigs (70-90 kg) underwent laparoscopic liver...
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by increased mucus viscosity and delayed mucociliary clearance that contributes to progressive decline of lung function. Mucus in the respiratory GI tract excessively adhesive presence airway dehydration excess extracellular Ca2+ upon mucin release, promoting hyperviscous, densely packed mucins characteristic CF. Therapies target directly through ionic interactions remain unexploited. Here we show poly (acetyl, arginyl) glucosamine (PAAG), a polycationic...
Large, bilateral, pelvic, cystic masses were present in a 43 year old man with chronic rheumatoid arthritis. The cysts arose from the hip joints and compressed bladder resultant urinary symptoms. Biopsy indicated that their histologic appearance was compatible of "rheumatoid cysts," symptoms controlled steroid therapy. location, size, compressive effects these make this unique case.

Despite the potential for morbidity and permanent lifestyle alteration, few reports exist examining traumatic injury to anal canal, particularly among modern-day combatants. The aim of this study was document incidence, initial surgical management, long-term outcomes wartime trauma. This is a retrospective review.Data were compiled from multiple electronic medical record systems, including Department Defense Trauma Registry, Patient Administration Systems Biostatistics Activity, Armed Forces...
Objectives: 1) Measure serial serum intestinal fatty acid binding protein levels in infants undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass to evaluate for evidence of early post-operative enterocyte injury. 2) Determine the association between immediate circulating and subsequent development necrotizing enterocolitis. Design: Observational cohort study. Intestinal was measured preoperatively, at rewarming, 6 24 hours post-operatively. Percent goal enteral kilocalories on day 5...
ABSTRACT Objective: Infant cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) increases intestinal permeability leading to endotoxemia. Alkaline phosphatase (AP) reduces endotoxin toxicity in vitro but its effects on endotoxemia human disease are poorly understood. We assessed the association between serum AP activity and infants undergoing CPB determined effect of ex vivo addition Methods: Prospective cohort study 62 ≤120 days age CPB. Endotoxin Activity Assay (EAA) were measured pre-operatively, during...
Non-gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (nMRA) is a noninvasive, contrast-free imaging modality used for visualizing pedal arterial anatomy. We report application of the nMRA technique detailed in patient with dorsalis pedis aneurysm. Compared digital subtraction angiography, we demonstrate that provides sufficient detail needed to develop complex operative plan before vascular intervention without risk contrast agent or ionizing radiation exposure.
BACKGROUND This study evaluated performance of a tissue-engineered human acellular vessel (HAV) in porcine model acute vascular injury and ischemia. The HAV is an engineered blood consisted extracellular matrix proteins. Limb reperfusion outcomes the were compared with those from synthetic expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) grafts. METHODS Thirty-six pigs randomly assigned to four treatment groups, receiving either or PTFE graft following hind limb ischemia period 0 6 hours. All grafts...
Giant traumatic popliteal artery (PA) pseudoaneurysms (PSA) are rare but limb threatening if untreated. Management can be challenging, as no standardized approach exists. This report evaluates our experience with 3 cases treated differently. Treatment is individualized based on patient disease and comorbidities. Endovascular local patch arterial repair safe alternatives to graft bypass when feasible.
