We have investigated the scaling of peak vacuum ultraviolet output power from homogeneous Xe dielectric barrier discharges excited by short voltage pulses. Increasing fill pressure above 1 bar provides an increased pulse energy, a shortened duration and increases in two to three orders magnitude. High pulses up 6 W cm−2 are generated with high efficiency for rates 50 kHz. show that temporal characteristics good agreement results detailed computer modelling discharge kinetics.

A technique for measuring the refractive index of micron sized fibers using a series immersion matching oils, and image contrast measurements is proposed demonstrated.
