Abstract The Eurasian‐African NW‐SE oblique plate convergence produces shortening and orthogonal extension in the Alboran Sea Basin (westernmost Mediterranean), located between Betic Rif Cordilleras. A NNE‐SSW broadband of deformation seismicity affects central part. After 1993–1994 2004 seismic series, an earthquake sequence struck mainly its southern sector 2016–2017 (main event M w = 6.3, 25 January 2016). near‐surface is investigated using profiles, multibeam bathymetry, gravity data....

Abstract The Rif Cordillera is a part of the Alpine orogenic arc in Western Mediterranean, which was developed by interaction westward motion Alboran Domain between converging Eurasian and African plates. Prerif Ridges, located along southwestern front Rif, are south-vergent folds that places associated with faults affecting Jurassic to Quaternary sedimentary rocks slope breccias evidence deformations were active over Neogene-Quaternary period. different southward or southwestward...

The Atlas Mountains are characterized by high elevations and Quaternary volcanism. Long period magnetotelluric data acquired along a NNW‐SSE transect reveal the presence of conductive anomalous mantle below High Atlas. Data dimensionality analyses show preferent N80°E strike deep resistivity structure in agreement with induction vector alignment at long periods. Accordingly, 2D inversion set was carried out. Large resistive bodies crustal basement most likely correspond to batholiths...

The bituminous rocks of the Upper Cretaceous in Moroccan Rif have been assessed and characterized detail using organic geochemical techniques a variety parameters. matter from 4 sites was studied order to determine its thermal maturity depositional environments. extracts (bitumens) were fractionated on silica-potassium hydroxide column according aliphatic hydrocarbons, acid compounds polar compounds. Aliphatic hydrocarbons identified by gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS)....

A NE-SW magnetotelluric 110 km-long profile including 18 sites was acquired across the western Rif Cordillera along Eurasian-African plate boundary, allowing to constrain its poorly known deep structure. It extends from Internal Zones, close Alboran coast, crossing External Zones and up Gharb foreland basin. The periods recorded range 0.001 s 1000 s.The combination of data with available geological provides new insight regarding relationship Copyright 2011 by American Geophysical Union 1 14...

This article presents an analysis of the earthquake in Al Hoceima City through combination land use and seismic hazards. study is based on a probabilistic hazard performed following attenuation to predict maximum ground acceleration at each square kilometer. The area was estimated using GIS tools with Gaussian likelihood integrated supervised method remote sensing data processed from Landsat images 8, distribution values PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration) Hoceima. numerical ranging this latter...
