Abstract Background Listeria monocytogenes is among the most important foodborne bacterial pathogens due to high mortality rate and severity of infection. L. a ubiquitous organism occasionally present in intestinal tract various animal species faecal shedding by asymptomatically infected livestock poses risk for contamination farm environments raw food at pre-harvest stages. Summary Three‐hundred and forty‐five herds (17 swine, 122 dairy sheep, 124 beef 82 cattle) were investigated for prevalence of Shiga toxin‐producing Escherichia coli (STEC). Rectal faecal samples selectively enriched then examined by immunodetection techniques (Immunomagnetic Separation with anti ‐E. The IS1311 polymerase chain reaction-restriction endonuclease analysis was used to detect genetic differences among 38 Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (Map) isolates from cattle, sheep, goats and bison distinct regions of Spain, India the United States America (USA). In all eight bovine isolates, three out six caprine one ten ovine were C type, while other nine S type. India, five B so (Bison bison) USA. These results show that there are between Map related geographic host...

The authors investigated the prevalence of Salmonella spp. in 205 wild birds and mammals belonging to 45 species during years 2001 2002 Basque Country (Spain). was isolated from 16 (7.8%) animals. 8.5% (7/82) birds, 7.2% (9/123) mammals. Nine serotypes, all them enterica, were identified: two isolates Typhimurium (from 1/3 griffon vultures [Gyps fulvus], 1/5 sparrowhawks [Accipiter nisus]); one 6,14:z4, z23: (subsp. houtenae, 1/1 common kestrel [Falco tinnunculus]); Muenchen (1/1 captive...

SUMMARY Neospora caninum is a cyst-forming parasite that causes abortion in cattle. Despite this parasite's ubiquitous distribution and wide host range, the number of N. isolates obtained to date limited. In vitro isolation arduous often unsuccessful. addition, most have been from clinically affected hosts therefore could be biased towards more virulent isolates. report, an improved approach transplacentally infected newborn calves was undertaken 9 new were obtained. Moreover, microsatellite...

In this study, we examined the in vitro invasion and proliferation capacities of Nc-Liv ten Spanish Neospora caninum isolates (Nc-Spain 1 H - Nc-Spain 10). The rate was determined as number tachyzoites that completed their internalisation into MARC-145 cells at 2, 4, 6 h post-inoculation (pi). evaluated by determining doubling time during exponential period. Significant differences rates these were detected 2 4 pi (P < 0.0001, Kruskal-Wallis test). At pi, displayed highest, while 3 had...

Case summary Toxoplasma gondii is a globally distributed apicomplexan protozoan infecting all warm-blooded animals. Cats are the definitive host, susceptible to clinical disease. In Spain, studies have shown widespread presence of IgG antibodies in cats but there no published data on toxoplasmosis from Spain. We describe case fatal disseminated 7-year-old outdoor domestic shorthair cat. The cat, an active hunter, was presented with 1-week history malaise and acute deterioration over 24 h....

Border disease was diagnosed 16% the flocks, toxoplasmosis 15%, chlamydiosis 12%, salmonellosis 10%, Q fever 3%, miscellaneous infections 7% ( Yersinia spp., Listeria Brucella spp.), inflammatory lesions compatible with an cause seen flock. SUMMARY In this study, we characterized 8 new isolates obtained from healthy but congenitally infected calves using a BALB/c mouse model. Neospora caninum- mice survived without exhibiting any clinical signs of disease. Nevertheless, differences among in parasite organ distribution, burden and the severity histopathological lesions were determined. Mice with Nc-Spain 5H, 7 9 showed higher burdens more severe brain during late phase infection compared to 2H, 3H or 6 isolates. Furthermore,...
