Alternative therapies for Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia and endocarditis are needed. We randomly assigned 124 patients with S. or without to receive 6 mg of daptomycin intravenously per kilogram body weight daily 122 initial low-dose gentamicin plus either an antistaphylococcal penicillin vancomycin. The primary efficacy end point was treatment success 42 days after the therapy.Forty-two therapy in modified intention-to-treat analysis, a successful outcome documented 53 120 who received as...

Ribavirin was demonstrated to have an antiviral effect on respiratory syncytial virus in vitro. A 50% reduction plaque number observed at concentrations of 3 or 10 micrograms ribavirin per ml. This when the drug added as late 12 h postinfection. At greater than ml, size also noticeably decreased. similarly decreased infectious units released into culture supernatant. The be inversely related viral inoculum, although all above 3.2 ml visibly lessened cytopathic regardless inoculum. Cloning...

For fifteen years oral ciprofloxacin has been the standard treatment for malignant otitis externa, a sometimes fatal osteomyelitis of skull base usually caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa . Resistance to is developing. Over 16-month period, we saw five cases where externa progressed, with development cranial nerve palsies in four cases, despite ciprofloxacin. Prolonged intravenous antibiotic therapy became necessary. One case was managed largely as an out-patient, but patients spent many weeks...
The proteins of respiratory syncytial virus have not been clearly identified due to the lability and difficulties in its purification. We pulse-labeled with [35S]methionine [35S]cysteine analyzed cell lysates by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Five 35S-labeled viral ranging molecular weight from 21,000 73,000 (VP73, VP44, VP35, VP28, VP21) were easily discernable above background cellular proteins. Treatment infected cells 0.15 M NaCl before labeling suppressed host protein synthesis...

A loading dose and short-term administration of oral ribavirin significantly improved symptoms signs influenza type or B infection in 25 patients. The antiviral effect was not significant. No adverse clinical effects significant laboratory values were observed. Oral treatment patients with might be possible ribavirin.
