The Tiger Summit, to be hosted by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in Russia November 2010—the Chinese Year of the and International Biodiversity—promises most significant meeting ever held discuss fate a single non-human species. Summit will culminate efforts Global Initiative (GTI), launched 2008 Robert Zoellick, World Bank President. Leaders 13 tiger range states, supported international donors conservationists attending summit, are being asked commit substantive measures prevent...

Recognizing that protected areas (PAs) are essential for effective biodiversity conservation action, the Convention on Biological Diversity established ambitious PA targets as part of 2020 Strategic Plan Biodiversity. Under strategic goal to "improve status by safeguarding ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity," Target 11 aims put 17% terrestrial 10% marine regions under 2020. Additionally crucially, these required be particular importance ecosystem services, effectively equitably...

Abstract We conducted a survey in Cambodia 2000 on henipavirus infection among several bat species, including flying foxes, and persons exposed to these animals. Among 1,072 serum samples tested by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, antibodies reactive Nipah virus (NiV) antigen were detected only Pteropus lylei species; Cynopterus sphinx, Hipposideros larvatus, Scotophilus kuhlii, Chaerephon plicata, Taphozous melanopogon, T. theobaldi species negative. Seroneutralization applied subset of...

Many global environmental agendas, including halting biodiversity loss, reversing land degradation, and limiting climate change, depend upon retaining forests with high ecological integrity, yet the scale degree of forest modification remain poorly quantified mapped. By integrating data on observed inferred human pressures an index lost connectivity, we generate a globally consistent, continuous condition as determined by anthropogenic modification. Globally, only 17.4 million km2 (40.5%)...

The Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), signed in 2022 by Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, recognized importance of area-based conservation, and its goals targets specify characteristics protected conserved areas (PCAs) that disproportionately contribute biodiversity conservation. To achieve GBF’s target conserving a global area 30% 2030, this Essay argues for recognizing these scaling them up through conservation are: extensive (typically larger than 5,000 km 2 ); have...

Serum specimens from fruit bats were obtained at restaurants in Cambodia. We detected antibodies cross-reactive to Nipah virus by enzyme immunoassay 11 (11.5%) of 96 Lyle's flying foxes (Pteropus lylei). Our study suggests that viruses closely related or Hendra are more widespread Southeast Asia than previously documented.

Conservation investment, particularly for charismatic and wide-ranging large mammal species, needs to be evidence-based. Despite the prevalence of this theme within literature, examples robust data being generated guide conservation policy funding decisions are rare. We present first published case-study tiger in Indochina, from a site where an evidence-based approach has been implemented iconic predator its prey. persistence extensive areas habitat, Indochina's ungulate prey populations...

There have been reported cases of host-switching in avian and lizard species Plasmodium (Apicomplexa, Haemosporidia), as well those infecting different primate species. However, no evidence has previously found for host-swapping between wild birds mammals. This paper presents the results sampling blood parasites wild-captured bats from Madagascar Cambodia. The presence Haemosporidia infection these animals is confirmed cytochrome b gene sequences were used to construct a phylogenetic...

Pleurothallis machupicchuensis , a new species from Cusco, Perú, is described and illustrated. Information regarding its distribution, habitat, phenology provided. Morphologically, P. closely resembles scurrula sannio but can be distinguished mainly by the morphology of lip. The features an ovate, obtuse lip with prominent bilobed, reniform glenion, in contrast to oblong-ovate, acute small rounded glenion observed oblong .

Abstract In Cambodia, 1,303 bats of 16 species were tested for lyssavirus. No lyssavirus nucleocapsid was detected in 1,283 brains by immunofluorescence assay. Antibodies against lyssaviruses enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay 144 (14.7%) 981 serum samples. Thirty 187 samples contained neutralizing antibodies different lyssaviruses.

ABSTRACT 1. The few historical records of Dendrogale murina are from southern Vietnam, South‐east Thailand and probably Cambodia. Recent extend its range considerably further north in into Laos, provide the first certain Cambodian localities. Its occurrence within is patchy, while some areas (Cat Tien National Park, a part Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia) it clearly common, elsewhere infrequent. seems to be relatively easy observe, so documented for Vietnam approximates real range.
