MRI(Magnetic Resonance Image/Imager)は撮像対象内に含まれる水の様子を非破壊かつ3次元的に描出が可能である.MRIを用いて雪試料を撮像するためにはMRIで使用している複数のコイルからの発熱が雪試料へ与える影響や,低温室内に永久磁石を設置することにより発生する静磁場歪みに起因する画像歪みなどの問題を解決する必要があった.それらの問題を解決するため,雪氷用MRIではコイルからの発熱を抑制するための空冷装置と,湿雪試料の温度を一定に保つための液冷装置を組み合わせた冷却装置の使用が求められる.また,静磁場歪みの補正には静磁場補正用のコイルを用いるか,画像歪み補正ソフトを用いる必要がある.本稿では,現在実際に湿雪研究に用いられている雪氷用MRIの現状に関して解説をする.
