Comparison between the 7th edition of International Union Against Cancer staging system and the Chinese 2008 staging system for nasopharyngeal carcinoma and suggestions for the updating of the staging system

Objective To compare the 7th edition of International Union Against Cancer (UICC) staging system with Chinese 2008 for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), and to provide evidence further updating system.

Methods A retrospective analysis was performed among 767 patients who were pathologically newly diagnosed non-metastatic NPC treated intensity-modulated radiotherapy from 2006 2012. Based on main prognostic indices, overall survival (OS), locoregional failure-free survival(LFFS)local relapse-free (LRFS), distant metastasis-free (DMFS) rates, value T stage, N clinical stage in prediction compared between two systems. The Kaplan-Meier method used calculating rates. log-rank test difference analysis. Cox model multivariate analysis.

Results In terms a significantly better predictor OS LRFS rates than UICC system. In they comparable DMFS rate For new proposed based statistical results, T, N, gave prediction.

Conclusions The have their own advantages prediction. this study could contribute current NPC.
