Objectives Despite parallel global trends of increasing incarceration rates and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among women, STI epidemiological data for this vulnerable at-risk population are limited. The study objective was to characterise patterns symptoms explore covariates drivers indicating using syndemic theory a incarcerated women in Peru. Methods In cross-sectional study, sample 249 responded questionnaire on substance use, depression, sexual behaviour, violence, other...
Deferring ART until a CD4 count below cells/mm3 or other clinical indication in people with HIV (PWH) carries an increased risk of severe bacterial infections and tuberculosis (TB). It is not known if this reversed after initiation. We analyzed 4,684 adult PWH cell counts above 500 who were randomized to immediate deferred the Strategic Timing AntiRetrovial Treatment (START) trial. In May 2015, group was offered follow-up continued December 2021. Cox proportional hazards models used compare...
ABSTRACT In a Nicaraguan population-based cohort, SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence was 34%, with higher prevalence in children compared to adults. Having seropositive household member associated two-fold probability of individual seropositivity, suggesting role for transmission. Co-morbidities and preventive behaviors were not seroprevalence.
Tuberculosis remains one of the leading causes death worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries. treatment control efforts are hindered by difficulty making diagnosis, as currently available diagnostic tests too slow, expensive, or not sufficiently sensitive. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) is a novel technique that allows for DNA rapidly, at constant temperature, with minimal expense. We calculated compared limit detection, sensitivity, specificity two RPA-based...
Abstract In a Nicaraguan population-based cohort, SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence reached 28% in the first 6 months of country's epidemic and 35% later. Immune waning was uncommon. Individuals with seropositive household member were over three times as likely to be themselves, suggesting importance transmission.
Abstract Two individuals with human immunodeficiency virus presented in acute renal failure nephrotic range proteinuria and were diagnosed secondary syphilis. One of them also had elevated transaminases. Kidney biopsies revealed membranous nephropathy, a rare complication syphilis, both cases. Normal hepatic function restored after treatment penicillin.
Meat packing, produce processing, and farm workers are known to have an elevated risk of COVID-19, but occupational factors in this population unclear. We performed observational cohort study meat North Carolina fall 2020. Blood, saliva, nasal turbinate samples were collected assess for SARS-CoV-2 seropositivity. Risk seropositivity investigated using chi-square tests, two-sample t-tests, adjusted ratio analyses. Among 118 enrolled workers, the baseline seroprevalence was 50.0%. packing...
Background: Globally, there is evidence supporting the co-occurrence of intimate partner violence (IPV), substance use disorders (SUD) and mental health among women in prisons, however, limited research investigating these domains Andean region where rates female incarceration have increased. The study objective was to explore prevalence IPV, SUD depression incarcerated a Peruvian prison associations variables related correlates. Methods: 249 responded questionnaire about use, depression,...
Background: Racial and ethnic minorities have borne a disproportionate burden from COVID-19. Certain essential occupations, including food processing farm work, employ large numbers of Hispanic migrant workers been shown to carry an especially high risk infection. Methods: We conducted observational cohort study measuring the seroprevalence SARS-CoV-2 assessing factors for seropositivity among North Carolina (NC) members their households. Participants completed questionnaires we collected...
Racial and ethnic minorities have borne a disproportionate burden from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Certain essential occupations, including food processing farm work, employ large numbers of Hispanic migrant workers been shown to carry an especially high risk infection.
Abstract Background Neurological opportunistic infections cause significant morbidity and mortality in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) but are difficult to diagnose. Methods One hundred forty HIV acute neurological symptoms from Iquitos, Peru, were evaluated for cerebral toxoplasmosis quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cryptococcal meningitis antigen test (CrAg) serum or CSF. Differences between groups assessed standard statistical...
Abstract Background Despite increasing rates of incarceration and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among women globally, STI epidemiological data for this vulnerable at-risk population is limited. We therefore characterized patterns symptoms explored covariates drivers incarcerated in Peru. Methods Among 249 surveyed on substance use, depression, sexual behavior, violence, univariate bivariate analysis informed a latent profile (LPA) logistic regression assessing syndemic associations...
