Urinary tract infections represent common nosocomial infectious diseases. Bacteriocin production has been recently described as a putative virulence factor in these but studies focusing particularly on Pseudomonas aeruginosa are not available. Therefore, we assessed the prevalence of bacteriocin genes, their co-occurrence and co-association with previously detected factors set 135 P. strains from catheter-associated urinary (CAUTIs). The overall bacteriocinogeny reached 96.3 % an average 3.6...
The complete genome sequence of Pragia fontium 24613 was determined using PacBio RSII, Roche 454, and SOLiD sequencing. A total 3,579 genes were predicted, including 3,338 protein-coding sequences 146 pseudogenes. This is the first whole-genome a strain belonging to environmental genera family Enterobacteriaceae.
Fonticins are phage tail-like bacteriocins produced by the Gram-negative bacterium Pragia fontium from family Budviciaceae. This produces contractile-type particles that adsorb on surface of sensitive bacteria and penetrate cell wall, probably during contraction, in a way similar to type VI secretion system. We characterized pore-forming activity fonticins using both living cells vitro model membranes. Using potassium leakage assay, we show able permeabilize cells. On black lipid membranes,...
Summary Interactions within bacterial communities are frequently mediated by the production of antimicrobial agents. Despite increasing interest in research new antimicrobials, studies describing antagonistic interactions among cold‐adapted microorganisms still rare. Our study assessed 36 Antarctic Pseudomonas spp. and described genetic background these selected strains. The overall bacteriocinogeny was greater compared to mesophilic non‐aeruginosa species. R‐type tailocins were detected on...
Pragia fontium is one of the few species that belongs to group atypical hydrogen sulfide-producing enterobacteria. Unlike other members this closely related group, P. not associated with any known host and has been reported as a free-living bacterium. Whole genome sequencing metabolic fingerprinting confirmed phylogenetic position inside H 2 S producers. Genomic data have revealed 24613 limited pathogenic potential, although there are signs decay. Although lack specific virulence factors no...
Cold-adapted soil ecosystems represent dynamic communities varying in a structure, microbial abundance and metabolic activity. To antagonize competitors, bacteria produce variety of inhibitory agents. We tested production antimicrobials Pseudomonas spp. isolated James Ross Island, Antarctica, performed transmission electron microscopic analyses selected high-molecular-weight bacteriocin particles. The dimensions R-tailocins produced by sp. P2422 were 168 ± 2.0nm (length) 16 0.8nm (width)...
Pseudomonas-caused plant diseases are present worldwide and affect most of the major lineages higher plants which, as a consequence, may result in significant economic losses. Despite use bacteriocins produced by rhizosphere soil bacteria has been nowadays considered novel crop protection approach, antagonistic interactions cold-adapted isolates toward agriculturally important phytopathogenic have not studied yet. In this study, we tested inhibition activity Antarctic Pseudomonas spp....
