SUMMARY In an effort clarify the pathogenesis of pyometra, 20 cows with retained fetal membranes and without, but contemporary calving dates were studied. They palpated their uteri subjected to sample collections for bacteriologic cultural examinations twice weekly 4 weeks. Blood samples obtained each day evaluated serum progesterone concentration. Three without 3 developed pyometra during study, resulting in groups designated control ( con ), rfm pyo ). Bacterial isolations occurred less...

A Holstein dairy farm suffered an abortion outbreak due to neosporosis. Abortion losses were > 18%. Cows with the highest Neospora antibody titers at greatest risk of aborting. Mummified fetuses found after 43rd day outbreak. The epidemic curve was suggestive a point source exposure, which is consistent hypothesis that can be spread by definitive host.

Pregnancy and parturition are intricately regulated to ensure successful reproductive outcomes. However, the factors that control gestational length in humans other anthropoid primates remain poorly defined. Here, we show endogenous retroviral long terminal repeat transposon-like human element 1B (THE1B) selectively controls placental expression of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) that, turn, influences birth timing. Placental CRH subsequently prolonged were found two independent...

Objective: To define criteria for robotic credentialing using expert consensus. Background: A recent review of institutional policies identified significant variability and determined current are largely inadequate to ensure surgeon proficiency may threaten patient safety. Methods: Twenty-eight national surgery experts were invited participate in a consensus conference. After available discussion, the group developed 91 proposed criteria. Using modified Delphi process asked indicate their...

Summary Body condition scoring (using a 5-point scale with quarter-point divisions) was performed on 66 Holstein dairy cows that began their second or later lactation in August, September, October 1988. scored, beginning postpartum day 4(± 1) and subsequently at days (± 18, 32, 46, 60, 73, 87. Blood samples were obtained the same dates. Kilograms of milk produced per cow measured daily. score changes body evaluated relation to daily production, cumulative 80- yield, serum urea nitrogen...

Nematodes represent a diverse phylum of both free living and parasitic species. While the species Caenorhabditis elegans is valuable model organism, nematodes or helminths pose serious threat to human health. Indeed, cause many neglected tropical diseases that afflict humans. Nematode glycoconjugates have been implicated in evasive immunomodulation, hallmark nematode infections. One monosaccharide residue present several pathogens galactofuranose (Galf). This five-membered ring isomer...

Bacterial isolations were attempted from milk samples taken 242 range ewes in a southwestern Idaho shed lambing enterprise. Eighty-five percent of the ewe had no pathogenic bacterial growth at and 3 weeks later. The few organisms that isolated did not appear to affect udder condition or contribute lamb mortality. Shed conditions frequency isolation potentially bacteria. prevalence abnormalities, however, have positive association with lost theim lambs. most frequent abnormality was diffuse...

SUMMARY Cystic ovarian disease ( cod ) was studied in a closed 300-cow dairy herd, using Dairy Herd Improvement Association and individual health records for 7-year period (1974–1980). There were 2,112 calvings by 649 cows during the period. Cysts found 130 cows. Of that calved, 110 (16.9%) produced at least 1 daughter which developed. Two bulls sired 17.6% of daughters with , more than anticipated inasmuch as they only 11.6% all P <0.05). These removed from breeding program an attempt to...
