Abstract Objective 18F‐Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG‐PET) is widely used in presurgical assessment patients with drug‐resistant focal epilepsy (DRE) if magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and scalp electroencephalography (EEG) do not localize the seizure onset zone or are discordant. Methods In this multicenter, retrospective observational cohort study, we included consecutive DRE who had undergone FDG‐PET as part of their workup. We assessed utility FDG‐PET, which was...

To investigate the feasibility of antiepileptic drug (AED) withdrawal following anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) and to identify predictors post seizure recurrence. We prospectively studied outcome 310 consecutive patients, who were followed for a minimum 5 years ATL medically refractory mesial lobe epilepsy. In seizure-free we started AED tapering at 3 months in patients on duotherapy/polytherapy 1 year after those monotherapy. We used Kaplan-Meier survival curves estimate probability...

Summary Purpose In contrast to the well‐recognized association between acute symptomatic seizures and neurocysticercosis, antiepileptic drug ( AED )–resistant epilepsy calcified neurocysticercosis lesions CNL s) is poorly understood. We studied ‐resistant s, including feasibility outcome of resective surgery. Methods From prospective database maintained at our center, we reviewed data all patients with who underwent presurgical evaluation from January 2001 July 2010 had on imaging. used...

To identify the rate of successful antiepileptic drug (AED) withdrawal after resective surgery and predictors postwithdrawal seizure recurrence in patients with extratemporal epilepsy. We retrospectively analyzed postoperative AED profile 106 consecutive who had completed 2 or more years resections involving frontal, parietal, occipital lobes for AED-resistant epilepsy. potential recurrence, we compared attributes recurred nonrecurred groups by univariate multivariate analyses. We attempted 94...

Summary In areas where cysticercosis is endemic, calcified neurocysticercosis lesion(s) (CNL) and hippocampal sclerosis (HS) commonly coexist in patients with localization‐related epilepsies. To understand the pathogenesis of HS associated CNL, we compared characteristics three groups antiepileptic drug–resistant epilepsies: CNL HS, without (CNL alone), (HS alone). comparison to alone, those had more frequently located ipsilateral temporal lobe. Those a lower incidence febrile seizures,...

Summary Lacosamide, a recently introduced antiepileptic drug, acts by enhancing the slow inactivation of voltage‐dependent sodium channels. Cardiac conduction disturbances, namely atrial fibrillation and atrioventricular block, have been reported in patients with epilepsy. We report patient drug‐resistant focal epilepsy who developed asymptomatic sinus node dysfunction following lacosamide use, which resolved on stopping lacosamide. This is first associated therapy.

Objective To see the interrelation between chronic tension‐type headache (CTTH) and serum vitamin D levels. Background Several studies have suggested an association pain deficiency. Anecdotal evidence suggests that deficiency may be associated with migraine. Methods This case‐control study was carried out to examine CTTH 25‐hydroxy (25(OH) D) One hundred consecutive adult (>18 years) patients 100 matched healthy controls were enrolled. Results The 25(OH) levels significantly lower in than...

Purpose: To design a non–patient-specific system to detect the electrical onset of seizures in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods: We used EEG data from 29 18 epilepsy who underwent multiday video-scalp monitoring as part their presurgical evaluations. segmented each set into preictal and ictal phases, identified spectral entropy, energy, signal energy useful features for discriminating normal seizure conditions. The performance five different classifiers was analyzed using these...

To assess the value of postoperative EEG in predicting seizure outcome and recurrence following antiepileptic drug (AED) withdrawal patients with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS).We studied 262 consecutive MTLE-HS serial EEGs at 3 months, 1, 2, years after anterior lobectomy (ATL), considered presence interictal epileptiform discharges (IED) as abnormal. Objective To undertake the epidemiological evaluation of patients presenting with side‐locked headache and facial pain in a tertiary neurology outpatient clinic. Background Side‐locked unilateral include large number primary secondary headaches cranial neuropathies.
