Wildlife rehabilitation programs are widely employed for many endangered marine species and can serve as engaging platforms environmental outreach. However, their effectiveness at supporting populations in the wild depends on whether rescued animals survive reproduce after being released. Here, we assessed cold-stunned juvenile sea turtles resumed typical migratory diving behaviors rehabilitation. We deployed satellite transmitters onto 7 rehabilitated loggerhead Caretta caretta , 12 green...

The macro-epibiotic communities of sea turtles have been subject to growing interest in recent years, yet their micro-epibiotic counterparts are almost entirely unknown. Here, we provide the first evidence that diatoms epibionts for all seven extant species turtle. Using Scanning Electron Microscopy, inspected superficial carapace or skin samples from a single representative each turtle species. We distinguished 18 diatom taxa these individuals, with hosting at least two taxa. recommend...

Escherichia coli was isolated from feral house mice (Mus domesticus) during the course of a mouse plague in state Victoria, Australia. The isolates were characterized for production colicins and their resistance to co-occurring colicins. Of 447 examined, 59% found be colicinogenic. Phenotypic PCR-based genotypic methods used determine types being produced. Colicin E2 most common, representing 27% colicin-producing isolates. la produced by 3% colicinogenic remaining could not identified, but...

The diatom genus Proschkinia is a common element of biofilms covering diverse substrata in saline inland or shallow coastal environments. It can be distinguished from other naviculoid taxa by its lanceolate valves with fistula located within the central area and numerous open girdle bands U-shaped cross-section single row perforations on internal side fold. Despite this distinct morphology, frustules are typically weakly silicified often overlooked when cleaned material analysed. current...

Sea turtles host a diverse array of epibionts, yet it is not well understood what factors influence epibiont community composition. To test whether communities sea are influenced by the hosts’ nesting or foraging habitats, we characterized epibiota leatherback, olive ridley and green at single location on Pacific coast Costa Rica. We also compared these to conspecific populations elsewhere in East Pacific. If predicted that sympatrically would have comparable taxa. Alternatively, if...

Balaenophilus umigamecolus are reported for the first time in eastern Pacific, from Jalisco coast of western Mexico. Two new hosts represented: olive ridley turtle, Lepidochelys olivacea, and black Chelonia mydas agassizi. Data indicate a distinct correlation between presence B. copepods Stomatolepas praegustator, barnacles that grow imbedded turtle skin. This relationship may have implications marine health.

Several populations of a new Craspedostauros species were observed on museum specimens juvenile green turtle and Kemp's ridleys collected from Long Island Beach, New York, USA. The taxon, alatus Majewska & Ashworth sp. nov., exhibits distinctive set morphological features typical the genus, including cribrate areolae, stauros narrower than fascia, multiple doubly perforated girdle bands, two fore aft chloroplasts, but clearly differs all known in possessing partially fused proximal...

AbstractThe barnacles Stomatolepas elegans and praegustator are epibionts of sea turtles. The former is described as inhabiting the external skin turtles latter inside mouth gullet. This study evaluated genetic divergence among 69 traditionally defined individual S. six from 18 representing four host species five geographic locations in Atlantic Pacific Oceans. Genetic variation was compared for a 658-base-pair portion mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene locus. Our findings...

A three-dimensional (3D) approach for visualizing the phyletic relationship of living animals is proposed and developed as an alternative to current two-dimensional (2D) evolutionary trees. The 3D tree enhances visualization qualitative analysis since it simultaneously provides topological (tree-structure) spatial information (based upon genetically measured distances). However, meaning third dimension, particularly its temporal processes, further quantitative analyses emerge open questions....
