Therapies that use bioactive materials as replacement extracellular matrices may hold the potential to mitigate inhibition of regeneration observed after central nervous system trauma. Hyaluronic acid (HA), a nonsulfated glycosaminoglycan ubiquitous in all tissues, was investigated neural tissue engineering matrix.Chick dorsal root ganglia were cultured 3D hydrogel composed cross-linked thiol-modified HA or fibrin. Samples and images acquired at 48-, 60-, 192-hour time points. Images samples...

Acute spinal cord injury (SCI) is commonly treated by elevating the mean arterial pressure (MAP). Other potential interventions include cerebrospinal fluid drainage (CSFD).To determine efficacy of aggressive MAP elevation combined with intrathecal (ITP) reduction; our primary objective was to improve blood flow (SCBF) after SCI.All 15 pigs underwent laminectomy. Study groups included control (n = 3); SCI only (SCI + MAP) CSFD CSFD) and both 3). SCBF measured laser Doppler flowmetry. In group,...

OBJECTIVE Because gliomas have poorly defined tumor margins, the ability to achieve maximal resection is limited. To better discern these fluorescence-guided surgery has been used aid safe resection. The authors describe their experience with simultaneous use of intraoperative fluorescein sodium (FNa) confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) and operating microscope 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) fluorescence imaging for glioma improve CLE margin discrimination. METHODS FNa 5-ALA wide-field were...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The middle fossa approach is commonly used for lesions of the internal auditory canal (IAC). Localization superior semicircular (SSCC) key adequate drilling postmeatal triangle and exposure posterior IAC. only available anatomic landmark SSCC arcuate eminence, which has a variable relationship with SSCC. This study assessed potential use subarcuate canaliculus (SAC) as to localize help ensure safe triangle. METHODS: Sixteen cadaveric specimens temporal bone were...

Percutaneous microcompression of the trigeminal ganglion for neuralgia was performed 23 times on 21 patients. Significant abrupt drops in heart rate and blood pressure (P less than 0.0002) occurred when needle entered foramen ovale or upon balloon advancement inflation. In 16 (70%) procedures, fell abruptly to 60 less, by a mean 38%. Mean arterial decreased transiently 31% during 12 (55%) procedures. Our findings transient bradycardia hypotension mechanical stimulation compression mandibular...

OBJECTIVE Spinal cord injury occurs in 2 phases. The initial trauma is followed by inflammation that leads to fibrous scar tissue, glial scarring, and cavity formation. Scarring causes further axon death around above the injury. A reduction secondary could lead functional improvement. In this study, hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogels were implanted into gap formed hemisected spinal of Sprague-Dawley rats an attempt attenuate damage regenerate tissue. METHODS T-10 hemisection was created adult...

Abstract We used computer pattern recognition of proton magnetic resonance spectroscopic image data to differentiate between brain tumors and large, isolated, demyelinating lesions the type seen in multiple sclerosis. Leave‐one‐out linear discriminant analyses correctly classified profiles from five acute lesions, 20 low‐grade astrocytomas, 22 anoplastic 24 glioblastomas. Classification nonacute will require further development, as metabolic evolve over time.

Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE), a handheld imaging technology, provides intraoperative real-time cellular resolution examination of tissue architecture. We evaluated the feasibility and diagnostic capability first clinically approved CLE system for in vivo brain tumors. A total 50 patients who were to undergo tumor surgery prospectively enrolled. images interpreted by one CLE-experienced neuropathologist as lesional, non-lesional, or non-interpretable compared histology acquired at same...
