Our paper is the first study to synthesize currently available but decentralized data of cultured microbes associated with corals. We were able collate 3,055 isolates across a number published studies and unpublished collections from various laboratories researchers around world.

Dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP) is an important molecule in the marine sulfur cycle, produced large amounts by corals and their dinoflagellate endosymbionts, Symbiodiniaceae. Although are known to harbour bacteria that can catabolise DMSP, recent discovery of capable producing DMSP coastal deep-sea environments raises possibility a bacterial contribution output corals. Here, 157 associated with four common coral species were isolated screened for ability produce targeting dsyB , key gene...

Biodegradation of microplastics facilitated by natural marine biofouling is a promising approach for ocean bioremediation. However, implementation requires comprehensive understanding how interactions between the microbiome and dominant microplastic debris types (e.g., polymer additive combinations) can influence biofilm development drive biodegradation. To investigate this, polystyrene (PS) polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (< 200 µm in diameter) were prepared either without any additives (i.e.,...

Marine organisms produce a diverse range of toxins and bioactive peptides to support predation, competition, defense. The peptide repertoires stony corals (order Scleractinia) remain relatively understudied despite the presence tentacles used for predation defense that are likely contain compounds. Here, we show tentacle extract from mushroom coral, Heliofungia actiniformis, contains numerous with molecular weights analogous venom profiles species such as cone snails. Using NMR spectroscopy...

Abstract Bacteria associated with coral hosts are diverse and abundant, recent studies suggesting involvement of these symbionts in host resilience to anthropogenic stress. Despite the putative importance bacteria, work dedicated culturing coral-associated bacteria has received little attention. Combining published unpublished data, here we report a comprehensive overview diversity function culturable, bacteria. A total 3055 isolates from 52 were considered by our meta-survey. Of these, 1045...
