This study is based on the Swiss Canine Cancer Registry, comprising 121,963 diagnostic records of dogs compiled between 1955 and 2008, in which 63,214 (51.83%) animals were diagnosed with tumour lesions through microscopical investigation. Adenoma/adenocarcinoma (n = 12,293, 18.09%) was most frequent diagnosis. Other common diagnoses were: mast cell 4,415, 6.50%), lymphoma 2,955, 4.35%), melanocytic tumours 2,466, 3.63%), fibroma/fibrosarcoma 2,309, 3.40%), haemangioma/haemangiosarcoma...
Isoflurane is currently the most common volatile anaesthetic used in laboratory mice, whereas human medicine more modern sevoflurane often for inhalation anaesthesia. This study aimed to characterize and compare clinical properties of both anaesthetics anaesthesia mice. In an approach mirroring routine conditions (spontaneous breathing, gas supply via nose mask, preventing hypothermia by a warming mat) 50 min was performed. Anaesthetics were administered oxygen as carrier at standardized...
To determine the accuracy of and to establish reference values for a rebound tonometer (Tonovet) in normal feline eyes, compare it with an applanation (Tonopen Vet) evaluate effect topical anesthesia on tonometry.Six enucleated eyes were used both tonometers direct manometry. Intraocular pressure (IOP) was measured 100 cats tonometry. Of these, 22 tonometry without 33 tonometers. All evaluated free ocular disease. Both correlated well The best agreement achieved between 25-50 mmHg. accurate...
To assess whether fully normalised vertical ground reaction forces and stance times obtained at a trot depend on dog breed or body conformations.Peak (PVF), impulses (VI), (ST), ratio of forelimb impulse to total (RVI) 54 dogs seven different breeds were weight size according the theory dynamic similarity, tested for differences between breeds. Breeds Borzoi, Bernese Mountain dog, Great Dane, Labrador Retriever, Landseer, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Rottweiler. Body length (BLR) mass index (BMI)...
Abstract Objective —To measure the angles between patellar ligament and tibial plateau common tangent at tibiofemoral contact point (TFCP) throughout full range of motion stifle joint in dogs determine flexion which is perpendicular to or tangent. Sample Population —16 hind limbs from cadavers 9 adult without radiographically detectable degenerative disease. Procedures —Mediolateral radiographic views joints extension through were obtained (10° increments). Angles femoral long axes (β), γ),...
An automated technique for recording eating and rumination behaviour was evaluated in ten lactating Brown Swiss cows by comparing data obtained from a pressure sensor with via direct observation over 24-hour period. The device involved integrated the noseband of halter. analysed variables included number duration individual rumination, resting phases, total daily length these phases cuds chewed per day. Eating were readily differentiated based on characteristic profiles. Chewing movements...
Chlamydial infections in pigs are associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea, conjunctivitis and other pathologies. The aim of this study was to define the prevalence Chlamydiaceae Swiss fattening by applying sensitive specific detection methods correlate prior antibiotic treatment farm related factors differences prevalence. Conjunctival fecal swabs were collected from 636 29 pig farms without treatment, at beginning end period. screened real-time PCR for Chlamydiaceae. For chlamydial...
Cancer registries are valuable sources for epidemiological research investigating risk factors underlying different types of cancer incidence. The present study is based on the Swiss Feline Registry that comprises 51,322 feline patient records, compiled between 1965 and 2008. In these 18,375 tumours were reported. analyses influence sex, neutering status, breed, time age development most common tumour their locations, using a multiple logistic regression model. largest differences breeds...
The association between the occurrence of a lumbosacral transitional vertebra (LTV) and cauda equina syndrome (CES) in dogs was investigated. In 4000 control without signs CES, 3.5% had an LTV, while 92 with 16.3% LTV. lesion causing CES always occurred last true lumbar Dogs LTV were eight times more likely to develop than German Shepherd compared other breeds. Male twice as females. 1-2 years earlier
The prevalence of lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LTV) was determined by reviewing the pelvic radiographs 4000 medium‐ and large‐breed dogs 144 breeds routinely screened for canine hip dysplasia. An LTV seen in 138 (3.5%) dogs. higher German Shepherd Greater Swiss Mountain than other breeds, suggesting a genetic predisposition. There no gender transverse processes were divided into three types based on their morphological characteristics: lumbar type or 1; intermediate 2; sacral 3. In...
Eating and rumination variables were recorded in 300 healthy lactating dairy cows of 3 different breeds (100 Brown Swiss, 100 Holstein-Friesian, Swiss Fleckvieh cows). monitored during a 24-h period using an automated system that jaw movements via pressure sensor integrated into the noseband halter. Phases eating reliably identified recordings based on typical patterns seen previous studies. The analysed included duration rumination, number chewing cycles regurgitated cuds per cud. ate for...
Abstract Objective —To measure the angles between patellar ligament and tibial plateau common tangent at tibiofemoral contact point (TFCP) in stifle joints of dogs with partial rupture cranial cruciate (CrCL) for comparison data obtained intact CrCLs. Sample Population —60 54 surgically confirmed CrCL rupture. Procedures —Mediolateral radiographic views were obtained, conventionally defined (angle γ) to TFCP α) measured incidental joint flexion β) by 2 independent observers. Data underwent...
Summary Objectives: This in vitro study compares the femorotibial shear canine stifles with intact and transected cranial cruciate ligaments (CrCL), before after tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) by measuring distance between origin insertion of ligaments. Methods: Radiodense markers were inserted into bones at attachment sites sixteen cadaveric adult dogs. Each stifle was then mounted a testing apparatus. The distances measured on mediolateral radiographs, performed each under three...
To investigate the epidemiology of canine congenital and primary glaucoma in cases presented to University Zurich, Vetsuisse Faculty (UZH) from 1995 2009.Information was obtained computer database patients examined by members UZH Ophthalmology Service, between January August 2009. Congenital diagnosed based on age onset, lack evidence any antecedent eye conditions, and/or presence severity iridocorneal angle defects. The data evaluated for breed, gender at presentation.A total 5984 dogs...
In pigs, Chlamydia suis has been associated with respiratory disease, diarrhea and conjunctivitis, but there is a high rate of inapparent C. infection found in the gastrointestinal tract pigs. Tetracycline resistance described USA, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Cyprus Israel. Tetracyclines are commonly used pig production due to their broad-spectrum activity relatively low cost. The aim this study was isolate clinical samples cell culture evaluate antibiotic susceptibility vitro under...
