We have developed a Clostridium difficile PCR ribotyping method based on capillary gel electrophoresis and compared it with conventional ribotyping. A total of 146 C. isolates were studied: five reference strains (PCR ribotypes 001, 014, 017, 027 053); 141 clinical comprising 39 Austrian collected in the period 2006–2007 at 25 healthcare facilities. Capillary yielded up to 11 fragments per isolate 47 ribotype patterns. All but one clearly reflected chromatograms capillary-based typing....
ABSTRACT The clinical utility of Legionella urinary antigen assays for the diagnosis Legionnaires' disease was assessed by using samples from 317 culture-proven cases. sensitivities Binax enzyme immunoassay (EIA) and Biotest EIA were found to be 93.7 94.4% travel-associated infection 86.5 76.0% community-acquired but only 44.2 45.7% nosocomially acquired infection, respectively.
ABSTRACT A total of 382 isolates methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus originating from three Austrian regions and one adjacent Italian region (Vienna, Lower Austria, North Tyrol, South Tyrol) were typed by DNA sequence analysis the variable repeat protein gene ( spa typing). The strain collection consisted arbitrarily chosen clinical specimens taken in years 2003 to 2005 at 17 hospitals. most common types found t001 (28.8% all isolates), t190 (27.0%), t008 (14.1%), t041 (11.3%). 42...
Between 1999 and 2007 1,388 stool specimens from patients with acute flaccid paralysis or aseptic meningitis were submitted to the Austrian reference laboratory for poliomyelitis. Samples (201) yielded non-poliovirus enterovirus in culture. One hundred eighty-one viruses available typing 78 isolates which remained serologically untyped further analyzed by CODEHOP-PCR sequencing of VP1 gene 5'-untranslated region (5'-UTR). Typing revealed an Echovirus 30 outbreak northwestern Austria 2000,...
In order to assess the lethality of Clostridium difficile-associated disease (CDAD) and PCR ribotypes prevalent in Austria, Austrian Agency for Health Food Safety requested isolates C. difficile from patients a structured but arbitrary sampling scheme. allocated period February 2006 January 2007, local hospital laboratories within each nine provinces were asked submit at least ten cases CDAD. Confirmation species identification, toxin detection, susceptibility testing against four...
Community-acquired pneumonia due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in previously healthy individuals is a rare disease that associated with high fatality. On 14 February 2010 49-year-old woman presented an emergency room signs and symptoms of pneumonia, 2 days after returning from spa holiday wellness hotel. Blood cultures respiratory specimens grew P. aeruginosa. Despite adequate antimicrobial therapy, the patient died septic multiorgan failure on day nine hospitalization. 26, water samples were...
Hydaticus kadumane sp. nov., belonging to the (Prodaticus) sexguttatus species group, is described from Indian state Karnataka. In habitus and dorsal colouration, it similar several Borneo Island Philippines, but can be undoubtedly recognised based on shape of male genitalia. Photographs median lobe aedeagus are provided.
We present a molecular phylogeny and taxonomic review of the Pacific island colymbetine diving beetles, focusing on Fijian New Caledonian faunas. Four new species are described: Rhantus monteithi R. poellerbauerae from Caledonia, kini bula Fiji. also describe 3rd instar larvae spp. nov., assigned to adults using mtDNA sequence data discuss larval characters in light phylogeny. The phylogenetic hypotheses derived both parsimony Bayesian inference based 3508 aligned nucleotides combination...
The diversity of the aquatic and strictly riparian beetles Philippines is reviewed. A checklist (with 317 species subspecies) Coleoptera provided for first time herein. This covers following families (number subspecies in parentheses): Hydroscaphidae (1), Gyrinidae (15), Dytiscidae (65), Noteridae (4), Haliplidae (2), Hydraenidae Hydrochidae Spercheidae Hydrophilidae (72), Scirtidae (49), Elmidae (23), Dryopidae Psephenidae (16), Eulichadidae Limnichidae (20), Heteroceridae (5), Malachiidae...
SUMMARY Controlled parallel experiments were performed on the Vienna test model for evaluation of procedures hygienic hand-disinfection in three laboratories (Vienna, Mainz, Birmingham). The degerming activity four procedures, each taking 1 min, was assessed repeatedly and compared with that a standard disinfection procedure (ST) using isopropanol 60 % (v/v). mean log reductions (mean RF) as follows: n −propanol 50% (v/v) 4·85 5·14 (V) Mainz (M) respectively, ethanol 70 +...
Introduction: Little is known about prevailing ribotypes of Clostridium difficile infection in Romania where CDI not a mandatory notifiable disease. Methodology: We studied 64 non-duplicate C. isolates from patients hospitalised at the National Institute Infectious Diseases, Bucharest, between March 2011 and 2012. Results: Sixty-three produced toxins A B whereas 44 (69%) binary toxin. Ribotype 027 accounted for 43 (68%) 63 toxigenic strains. The remaining 20 belonged to 018 (n = 9), 012 3),...
Wet cooling systems are often associated with large outbreaks of Legionnaires' disease. Several European countries have legislation for registering such systems. The authors aimed to obtain an overview the situation in Europe. A questionnaire survey was sent 35 that collaborate Working Group Legionella Infections. In two it passed a regional level (to three regions both Belgium and United Kingdom), so 39 or were survey; 37 responded. Nine stated having registration wet Separate exists at all...
In 2010 a case of dual infection with Legionella pneumophila serogroup (sg) 1 and sg 3 was identified by culture blood sample collected from female Austrian patient septic pneumonia. Subsequently all 35 European National Reference Laboratories were interviewed regarding the frequency infections in legionellosis. The Denmark, UK Germany reported detection another 14 cases different strains between 2002 2012. Among 15 cases, there four species, six L. serogroups, five MAb-types. median age 56...
A prospective, randomized clinical trial was performed to study the efficacy of povidone iodine (Betadine®) suppositories for treatment bacterial vaginosis (BV) in comparison capsules containing lactobacilli (Döderlein Med®). Seventy patients with BV included were randomly assigned be either treated or lactobacilli. Patients once a day 5 days. Initial examinations took place on first follow-up days 8 and 15. The parameters, patient evaluation,...
