This paper presents an accelerated ferrate(VI) (FeVIO42-, FeVI) oxidation of contaminants in 30 s by adding one-electron and two-electron transfer reductants (R(1) R(2)). An addition R(2) (e.g., NH2OH, AsIII, SeIV, PIII, NO2-, S2O32-) results FeIV initially, while FeV is generated with the R(1) SO32-). additives, except S2O32-, show enhanced 20-40% target contaminant, trimethoprim (TMP). Comparatively, TMP was up to 100% FeVI. Interestingly, S2O32- (i.e., R(2)) also achieves 100%. Removal...

Abstract Objectives: Prolonged survival of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on environmental surfaces and personal protective equipment may lead to these transmitting this pathogen others. We sought determine the effectiveness a pulsed-xenon ultraviolet (PX-UV) disinfection system in reducing load SARS-CoV-2 hard N95 respirators. Methods: Chamber slides respirator material were directly inoculated with exposed different durations PX-UV. Results: For surfaces, for...

There have been several recent reports of Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) due to isolates with reduced fidaxomicin susceptibility (minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] ≥ 2 µg/mL). However, the clinical implications are uncertain because achieves high concentrations in intestinal tract. In an acute care hospital, we conducted a 3-year cohort study patients CDI determine frequency and impact on response treatment. Stool specimens were cultured for C. difficile, testing was performed...

Healthcare-acquired infections with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are a significant cause of increased mortality, morbidity and additional health care costs in United States. Surface decontamination technologies that utilize pulsed xenon ultraviolet light (PPX-UV) may be effective at reducing microbial burden. The purpose this study was to compare standard manual room-cleaning PPX-UV disinfection technology for MRSA bacterial heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) on...

While research has demonstrated the importance of a clean health care environment, there is lack on role portable medical equipment (PME) play in transmission cycle healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs). This study investigated patterns and sequence contact events among workers, patients, surfaces, hospital environment. Research staff observed patient over six different 24 h periods units. Each encounter was recorded as analyzed using analysis visually represented by network plots. In...

Persistent severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection is difficult to treat. Here, we report a case of 5-month persistent disease 2019 in an immunocompromised patient who was successfully treated with 30 consecutive days remdesivir. Prolonged remdesivir infusion concurrent cycle threshold monitoring might provide potential solution cure these patients difficult-to-treat infections.

Pathogen transmission from contaminated surfaces can cause hospital-associated infections. Although pulsed xenon ultraviolet (PX-UV) light devices have been shown to decrease hospital room bioburden in the United States, their effectiveness Kingdom (UK) hospitals is less understood.Forty isolation rooms at Queens Hospital (700 beds) North London, UK, were sampled for aerobic bacteria after patient discharge, manual cleaning with a hypochlorous acid-troclosene sodium solution, and PX-UV...

The doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE) after contamination with pathogens such as Ebola poses a risk to health care workers. Pulsed xenon ultraviolet (PX-UV) disinfection has been used disinfect surfaces in hospital settings. This study examined the impact PX-UV on an surrogate virus glass carriers and PPE material examine potential benefits using decontaminate while worn, thereby reducing pathogen load prior doffing. Ultraviolet (UV) safety coverage tests were also conducted....

Talaromyces marneffei infection is a systemic mycosis, caused by dimorphic fungus, an opportunistic pathogen formerly known as Penicillium marneffei. This disease endemic to Southeast Asia and common in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected patients with low CD4 counts. Here we present very rarely reported case of apparent non-immunosuppressed patient presenting decades later non-endemic setting (United States).
