Many Americans fail to get life-saving vaccines each year, and the availability of a vaccine for COVID-19 makes challenge encouraging vaccination more urgent than ever. We present large field experiment ( N = 47,306) testing 19 nudges delivered patients via text message designed boost adoption influenza vaccine. Our findings suggest that messages sent prior primary care visit can rates by an average 5%. Overall, interventions performed better when they were 1) framed as reminders flu shots...
Significance Encouraging vaccination is a pressing policy problem. Our megastudy with 689,693 Walmart pharmacy customers demonstrates that text-based reminders can encourage and establishes what kinds of messages work best. We tested 22 different text using variety behavioral science principles to nudge flu vaccination. Reminder texts increased rates by an average 2.0 percentage points (6.8%) over business-as-usual control condition. The most-effective reminded patients shot was waiting for...

Purpose To evaluate if nudges delivered by text message prior to an upcoming primary care visit can increase influenza vaccination rates. Design Randomized, controlled trial. Setting Two health systems in the Northeastern US between September 2020 and March 2021. Subjects 74,811 adults. Interventions Patients 19 intervention arms received 1-2 messages 3 days preceding their appointment that varied format, interactivity, content. Measures Influenza vaccination. Analysis Intention-to-treat....
Cognitive reappraisal (CR) is regarded as an effective emotion regulation strategy. Acute stress, however, believed to impair the functioning of prefrontal-based neural systems, which could result in lessened effectiveness CR under stress. This study tested behavioral and neurobiological impact acute stress on CR. While undergoing fMRI, adult participants ( n = 54) passively viewed or used regulate their response negative neutral pictures provided ratings affect each picture. Half...
Influenza vaccinations are recommended for high-risk individuals, but few population-based strategies exist to identify individual risks. Patient-level data from unvaccinated stratified into retrospective cases (n = 111,022) and controls 2,207,714), informed a machine learning model designed create an influenza risk score; the was called Geisinger Flu-Complications Flag (GFlu-CxFlag). The flag created validated on cohort of 604,389 unique individuals. Risk scores were generated cases;...
Cognitive reappraisal (CR) is a strategy used to regulate emotions that thought be effective but effortful, relying on higher-order cognitive control systems engage in active regulation. Sleep deprivation believed impair the functioning of these systems, suggesting it may impede ability implement CR effectively. This study tested causal effects sleep emotional reactivity and neurobiological underlying CR. We employed within-subject crossover design which participants underwent fMRI scanning...

Abstract For many vaccine-preventable diseases like influenza, vaccination rates are lower than optimal to achieve community protection. Those at high risk for infection and serious complications especially advised be vaccinated protect themselves. Using influenza as a model, we studied one method of increasing vaccine uptake: informing high-risk patients, identified by machine learning about their status. Patients (N=39,717) were evenly randomized (1) control condition (exposure only...
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly used in healthcare to identify patients needing intervention, but evidence from laboratory studies mixed about whether exhibit aversion or appreciation for AI use their care. As a field test of algorithm appreciation, four large-scale preregistered randomized controlled trials, totaling over 100,000 unique patients, encouraged influenza vaccination identified by previously validated machine-learning be at high risk flu and flu-related...
Accurately capturing participant’s true demographic characteristics can be difficult when participants are reluctant to share personal information but researchers want a complete dataset. While forced response requirements ensure responses, they also lead respondent discomfort, attrition, or dishonesty. One solution is allow the option of selecting “prefer not answer” as their response. To examine effect responding and on self-reported in web-based surveys, (initial sample n = 12,915,...
Psychological stress during memory encoding influences resulting representations. However, open questions remain regarding how interacts with emotional memory. This interaction has mainly been studied by characterizing the correct identification of previously observed material (memory “hits”), few studies investigating incorrect endorsement unobserved as remembered “false alarms”). While hits can provide information about presence or strength a representation, false alarms insight into...
