Objective: to evaluate the performance of 4 ‘A’s Test (4AT) in screening for delirium older patients. The 4AT is a new test rapid routine clinical practice. Design: prospective study consecutively admitted elderly patients with independent and reference standard assessments. Setting: an acute geriatrics ward department rehabilitation. Participants: two hundred thirty-six (aged ≥70 years) over period months. Measurements: each centre, was administered by geriatrician eligible within 24 h...

The Mini‐Mental State Examination (MMSE), a brief test to assess cognitive status, is heavily influenced by age and education. It was administered 1019 elderly subjects (aged 65–89 years) living in three different Italian cities. A statistical non‐linear regression model built up order obtain adjustment coefficients reduce the influence of demographic variables on MMSE raw scores. Age educational level were significantly independently associated with score. Results multiple linear...

The relation between changes in brain and plasma concentrations of neurosteroids the function structure γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA ) receptors during pregnancy after delivery was investigated rats. In contrast with plasma, where all steroids increased parallel, kinetics cerebrocortical progesterone, allopregnanolone (AP), allotetrahydrodeoxycorticosterone (THDOC) diverged pregnancy. Progesterone already maximally days 10 15, whereas AP peaked around day 19. stimulatory effect muscimol...

Background Music therapy (MT) has been proposed as valid approach for behavioral and psychologic symptoms (BPSD) of dementia. However, studies demonstrating the effectiveness this are lacking. Objective To assess MT in reducing BPSD subjects with Method Fifty-nine persons dementia were enrolled study. All them underwent a multidimensional assessment including Mini Mental State Examination, Barthel Index Neuropsychiatry Inventory at enrolment after 8, 16, 20 weeks. Subjects randomly assigned...

To date, delirium prevalence in adult acute hospital populations has been estimated generally from pooled findings of single-center studies and/or among specific patient populations. Furthermore, the number participants these not exceeded a few hundred. overcome limitations, we have determined, multicenter study, over single day large population patients admitted to and rehabilitation wards Italy. This is point study (called "Delirium Day") including 1867 older (aged 65 years or more) across...

The time courses of changes in rat brain neuroactive steroid concentrations and γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptor function elicited by acute stress were investigated animals exposed to CO2 for 1 min, a treatment known induce rats panic attacks humans. Inhalation induced increases cerebral cortical concentrations, the dependence which varied with examined. Thus, progesterone deoxycorticosterone showed maximal (10- 4-fold, respectively) 10 min after inhalation had returned basal...

To describe atrophic changes of the hippocampus and entorhinal cortex in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) compare them with those AD.The medial temporal lobe shows early course AD, but whether these are specific to AD or occur other degenerative dementias, what extent, is unclear. The authors measured volumes left right from MR images (1.5 T, 2-mm-thick slices) 12 patients FTD, 30 elderly control subjects. In FTD patients, (16% 21% tissue loss) (28% 27% were more than subjects. To assess noun and verb processing in different dementia types, we tested object action naming three groups of subjects: probable Alzheimer's disease (AD) with mild to moderate dementia; age- education-matched normal subjects; a group frontotemporal (FTD) patients. AD FTD patients were impaired compared control was more severely impaired. However, the discrepancy between significantly greater than patients, independent severity or overall language impairment. The latter finding is compatible...

To test the hypothesis of opiate-like peptide release after transcutaneous electrotherapy we measured β-endorphin cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) content in 13 patients without pain problems. The results indicate a time dependent increase CSF group studied. This fact suggests that analgesic properties treatment may be ascribed to an involvement endogenous opiates system, independently from basal clinical conditions patients.

Italy has been hit very hard by the severe acute respiratory syndrome—coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. This brief report highlights some of peculiarities manifested its older adult population, with particular reference to those living in nursing institutions and at home. Mortality data (as 26 April) are reported, together reactions forced isolation, loneliness, fear contracting disease, which represent big challenges for all, especially frail elderly people.
