Although many oxide semiconductors possess wide bandgaps in the ultraviolet (UV) regime, currently majority of them cannot efficiently emit UV light because band-edge optical transition is forbidden a perfect lattice as result symmetry states. This quantum mechanical rule severely constrains applications wide-bandgap oxides, which also reason why so few oxides enjoy success ZnO.
