The Common Core Mathematics Standards have raised expectations for schools and students in the United States. These standards demand much deeper content knowledge from teachers of mathematics their students. Given increasingly diverse student population today’s classrooms shortage qualified special education teachers, computer-assisted instruction may provide supplementary support, conjunction with core instruction, meeting needs different learning profiles. purpose this study was to explore...

ABSTRACT The authors compared a conceptual model- based problem-solving (COMPS) approach with general heuristic instructional for teaching multiplication–division word-problem solving to elementary students learning problems (LP). results indicate that only the COMPS group significantly improved, from pretests posttests, their performance on criterion test (that involves equal groups and multiplicative compare problems) prealgebra model expression test. study suggest LP can be expected move...

Informed by a constructivist-based, student-adaptive pedagogical approach, this study explores the benefits of teacher–learner discourse moves for mathematics learning students with disabilities (LD). During constructivist teaching experiment nurturing multiplicative reasoning and problem solving five third-grade school-identified LD, we analyzed global trends detailed dynamics teacher–student interactions statistical analysis. We found that teacher’s to support each individual student’s...

Adaptive automation (AA) can improve performance while addressing the problems associated with a fully automated system. The best way to invoke AA is unclear, but two ways include critical events and operator's state. A hybrid model of invocation, dynamic operator overload (DMOO), that takes into account state was recently shown performance. DMOO initiates using attention allocation, informed by eye movements. We compared an inaccurate invocation system invoked based only on events. Fewer...

This research shows that employing critical thinking (problem-solving and scientific reasoning) skills when learning about climate change helped undergraduate biology students to understand the subject matter better. In this post hoc analysis of pre- post-test scores from a public Florida college, we identified significant results, with medium effect sizes, for treatment help undergraduates tie together concepts on in introductory classes. Age was determined not be factor.

Project-Based Instruction (PBI) is prevalent in science classrooms, which focuses on real-world tasks as a vehicle for student learning. PBI can be fitting instructional approach to enhance mathematics problem-solving. This case study explored two pre-service secondary teachers’ with problem-solving based their intended and enacted lessons. Data sources were the teacher (PST)’s lesson plans video-recorded classroom observations. Results from data analysis report that PSTs employed wide range...

Quantitative Reasoning (QR) is essential for today's students, yet most higher education institutions have not effectively addressed this issue. This study investigates students' quantitative reasoning in STEM and Non-STEM math pathways using a non-proprietary, NSF grant-funded instrument, the Literacy & Assessment (QLRA). Participants were students enrolled at least one college-level pathway course large public institution southeastern US. The results showed significant difference between...

Estimating the difficulty level of math word problems is an important task for many educational applications. Identification relevant and irrelevant sentences in step calculating levels such problems. This paper addresses a novel application text categorization to identify two types mathematical problems, namely sentences. A joint probabilistic classification model proposed estimate probability decisions all problem by utilizing correlation among along with between question sentence other...
