Megakaryocytes generate platelets by remodeling their cytoplasm into long proplatelet extensions, which serve as assembly lines for platelet production. Although the mechanics of elongation have been studied, terminal steps maturation and release remain poorly understood. To elucidate this process, released proplatelets were isolated, conversion individual was assessed. This enabled us to (a) define quantify different stages in maturation, (b) identify a new intermediate stage production,...
Abstract Competency with numbers is essential in today’s society; yet, up to 20% of children exhibit moderate severe mathematical learning disabilities (MLD). Behavioural intervention can be effective, but the neurobiological mechanisms underlying successful are unknown. Here we demonstrate that eight weeks 1:1 cognitive tutoring not only remediates poor performance MLD, also induces widespread changes brain activity. Neuroplasticity manifests as normalization aberrant functional responses a...
In this research the authors examined middle school special education teachers' perceptions of assistive technology during literacy instruction with students high incidence disabilities. A survey explored use, effectiveness, and factors impacting use or effectiveness for teaching learning. Results suggested perceived to be an effective tool literacy, but it minimally. When was used, teachers indicated support. Teachers also reported barriers using in including cost, usability, lack...
Self-disclosure of HIV infection to current sexual partners was examined in 138 seropositive men, mostly lower income Hispanics, from Los Angeles. Forty-five percent had been sexually active since learning their serostatus. Of these, 52% kept secret one or more partners. The likelihood disclosure decreased direct proportion the number Nondisclosure occurred conjunction with unprotected receptive and insertive anal intercourse. Potential factors promoting nondisclosure are discussed.
The role of cultural assimilation in Hispanic health behavior has received little empirical examination. Prior studies have operationalized primarily terms language preference and obtained weak or no effects. We interviewed 603 elderly women residing Los Angeles to evaluate the usefulness factors as predictors preventive (e.g., physical examination, screening for breast cancer) more rigorously. Factor analysis responses yielded four dimensions assimilation: "language preference", "country...
Abstract Mathematical disabilities ( MD ) have a negative life‐long impact on professional success, employment, and health outcomes. Yet little is known about the intrinsic functional brain organization that contributes to poor math skills in affected children. It now increasingly recognized cognition requires coordinated interaction within large‐scale fronto‐parietal network anchored intraparietal sulcus IPS ). Here we characterize connectivity this ‐network children with , relative group...
Plasticity of white matter tracts is thought to be essential for cognitive development and academic skill acquisition in children. However, a dearth high-quality diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data measuring longitudinal changes with learning, as well methodological difficulties multi-time point tract identification have limited our ability investigate plasticity specific tracts. Here, we examine learning-related innervating inferior parietal, prefrontal temporal regions following an intense...
Approaches to training biomedical scientists have created a talented research community. However, they failed create professional workforce that includes many racial and ethnic minorities women in proportion their representation the population or PhD training. This is particularly true at faculty level. Explanations for absence of diversity ranks can be found social science theories reveal processes by which individuals develop identities, experiences, skills required seen as legitimate...
Background: Exposure in utero to certain medications can disrupt processes of fetal development, including brain leading a continuum neurodevelopmental difficulties. Recognizing the deficiency investigations within pregnancy pharmacovigilance, an international Neurodevelopmental Expert Working Group was convened achieve consensus regarding core outcomes, optimization methodological approaches and barriers conducting pharmacovigilance studies with outcomes. Methods: A modified Delphi study...
Lameness related to the middle carpal joint (MCJ) occurs in up 30% of young Standardbred horses race training and incidence increase with radiographic severity third bone (C3) sclerosis on DPr-DDIO (skyline) view carpus. Factors predisposing injury have not been well investigated. To determine importance MCJ lameness as a cause wastage racehorses, stage at which it factors, describe clinical findings diagnosis.Standardbred (n = 114) entering their first year were examined approximately...
A 1‐year‐old working Kelpie developed pneumothorax and focal peritonitis after inhalation of a grass awn that migrated from the lung, through diaphragm, into peritoneal cavity. Radiographic evidence sternal lymph node enlargement was fundamental in diagnosis intraperitoneal disease prompted abdominal ultrasound leading to definitive diagnosis.
ABSTRACT A technique using two interbody washers and a transvertebral screw was utilised to distract the cervical vertebrae so decompress spinal cord in 17 dobermann pinschers three great danes with spondylopathy. Neurological dysfunction graded (1 5) according degree of hindlimb ataxia. Myelography showed evidence compression at C6‐7 all dogs C5‐6 six dogs. Twenty‐three compressive lesions were reduced when traction applied spine. Seventeen improved following surgery these 10 by or more...
Summary Reasons for performing study : Sclerosis of the third carpal bone is a common radiographic finding in both lame and sound racehorses, but there are no guidelines correlating degree sclerosis incidence lameness. Objectives To develop protocol describing subchondral C3 on dorsoproximal‐dorsodistal oblique (DPr‐DDiO) radiographs carpus to correlate these changes with exercise history Methods One hundred six Standardbreds entering their first year training (exercise group) 7 age‐matched...
