Traumatic brain injury (TBI) was induced by a weight-drop device using 300 g-1 m weight-height impact. The study groups were: control, alpha-lipoic acid (LA) (100 mg/kg, po), TBI, and TBI + LA po). Forty-eight hours after the injury, neurological scores were measured samples taken for histological examination or determination of thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS) glutathione (GSH) levels, myeloperoxidase (MPO) Na(+)-K(+) ATPase activities, whereas cytokines (TNF-alpha, IL-1beta)...

The overproduction of reactive oxygen species and resultant damage to cellular proteins or lipids cell membranes DNA by free radicals are the underlying mechanisms many neuropathologies. Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors have been suggested be neuroprotective reducing prostanoid radical synthesis, directing arachidonic acid metabolism through alternate pathways. This study investigated putative effect COX-2 inhibitor, meloxicam, in a rat model diffuse brain injury.Sprague-Dawley rats were...

Oxidative stress is a mediator of secondary injury to the spinal cord following trauma. To investigate putative neuroprotective effect alpha-lipoic acid (LA), powerful antioxidant, in rat model (SCI).Wistar albino rats were divided as control, vehicle-treated SCI, and LA-treated SCI groups. To induce standard weight-drop method that induced moderately severe (100 g/cm force) at T10 was used. Injured animals given either 50 mg/kg LA or saline 30 minutes postinjury by intraperitoneal injection....

Introduction: Traumatic brain injury is highly associated with the over-production of reactive oxygen species. The aim this study was to investigate putative neuroprotective effect montelukast, a cysteinyl-leukotriene receptor antagonist, in rat model traumatic (TBI).Methods: Sprague Dawley rats were subjected TBI weight-drop device using 300 g-1 m weight-height impact. groups were: control (saline), montelukast (10 mg kg −1 per day, ip), trauma and + montelukast.
