Plecoptera are one the most endangered groups of insects in running waters. Due to their strict ecological needs and growing pollution water courses, many species fact reduced small isolated populations others have already become extinct. With aim compiling taxonomic faunistic lists European (within project Fauna Europaea, ref. EVR1‐CT‐1999‐2001), we catalogued a total 426 included 35 genera seven families reviewed present diversity conservation status. Historical knowledge geographical...

The stonefly genus Tyrrhenoleuctra includes species living in western Mediterranean temporary freshwater streams, sometimes also at sea level, a very unusual habitat for most Plecoptera.Traditional morphological approaches proved unsuccessful drawing both taxonomic and phylogenetic patterns, thus hampering discussion of biogeographical patterns this interesting group. We aimed at: (a) assessing the status populations covering geographic range genus; (b) studying relationships among recognized...

The Central-Southern European genus Besdolus was reinstated and revised by Zwick Weinzierl (1995), includes five species: B. imhoffi (Pictet), ventralis bicolor (Navás), ravizzarum & Weinzierl, illyricus Kovács Zwick. Overall, these species are rarely collected have apparent relictual distributions. From the ecological point of view, bicolor, seem to be more orophilic whereas associated lowland rivers. These sensitive environmental perturbations endangered taxa, threatened with...

Abstract In this work we present the results of a one‐year study on macroinvertebrate community in an intermittent stream southern Spain. We have studied taxonomic composition, diversity and food web monthly order to consider temporal variability these parameters. More than 60 taxa been recorded stream, but they do not cohabit at same time. Many them join beginning wet period. Afterwards, some new incorporate others disappear. This leads huge fluctuations different sampling dates. These...

The identity of Isoperla curtata Navás, 1924, an Iberian endemic, has been questioned since its description. Marked variability in pigmentation, wing length, penial armature and ecology populations have noted. To clarify the taxonomic status I. we examined variation mating calls cytochrome c oxidase subunit I sequences for two from north-central southern Spain. Results both approaches support presence species. population corresponds to nominal taxon, curtata, while represent a new species,...

Contrary to what was assumed regarding the presence of respiratory proteins in insects, a functional hemocyanin recently found larvae and adults stoneflies species Perla marginata, whereas close grandis, functionality deduced from sequence data. In order verify if this ancient trait is widespread within investigate why have maintained it, we extended search for other Plecoptera families. particular, assessed larval stage nine species, belonging six seven families European stonefly-fauna,...

The specific role of hemocyanin in Plecoptera (stoneflies) is still not completely understood, since none the hypotheses advanced have proven fully convincing. Previous data show that mRNA sequences are present all Plecoptera, and does seem to be uniformly distributed within order. All species possess hexamerins, which multifunction proteins probably originated from hemocyanin. In order obtain an increasingly detailed picture on presence distribution across order, this study presents new...

Summary. Some aspects of the life history a population Dinocras cephalotes inhabiting Mediterranean river in Southern Spain were studied over year (2012–2013). The cycle this seems to be semivoltine, approximately two years duration, and with an asynchronous egg hatching period. comparison these data those unpublished study carried out same almost decade before (2004–2005) shows existence no differences between years. nymphal feeding revealed that main prey organisms are Chironomidae,...

Tyrrhenoleuctra lusohispanica sp. n., a new species of the leuctrid genus from southern Iberian Peninsula (southern Portugal and Spain) is described solely on molecular characters. Molecular analyses clearly indicated distinctness this demonstrated presence cryptic in Tyrrhenoleuctra. We also describe systematic affinities T. n. to other genus. With all species, exhibits marked phenotypic variability.

A new species of Tyrrhenoleuctra from the Balearic Islands, T. antoninoi sp. n., is described on basis molecular and biochemical characters. Recent analysis clearly demonstrates distinctness this species. We describe its relatedness to other in genus. also refer all specimens Islands previously assigned minuta antoninoi. As with species, shows marked phenotypic plasticity, presumably due variability inherent temporary streams which it inhabits.

Abstract Thus far, data on the hemocyanin are available only for European Plecoptera, present study reports this from Oriental fauna. Six species of family Perlidae and one Peltoperlidae Thailand studied did not reveal mRNA sequences, confirming that all Plecoptera universally have sequences. Results also suggest presence hemocyanins, at least quantitative terms, does depend body size, life cycle or trophic role, as had...
