We present the application of ionic liquid-aqueous micellar solutions as isolation media for pharmaceutically active ingredient piperine from black pepper. Several surface-active liquids including a biodegradable betaine derivative were used extraction piperine, and strong correlation between yield critical micelle concentration respective liquid was found. Starting from cheap chiral pool precursors camphorsulfonic acid and camphene, several imidazolium ionic liquids were synthesized in high overall yield.
