In this article we present novel learning methods for estimating the quality of results returned by a search engine in response to query. Estimation is based on agreement between top full query and its sub-queries. We demonstrate usefulness estimation several applications, among them improvement retrieval, detecting queries which no relevant content exists document collection, distributed information retrieval. Experiments TREC data robustness effectiveness our algorithms.

The effects of perceptual load on the level adaptation to task-irrelevant and invisible oriented gratings were examined. Participants performed a task at fixation under conditions low (detecting color targets) or high conjunctions shape) load. Simultaneously, task-irrelevant-oriented grating was presented monocularly in more peripheral location but suppressed from awareness by flashing dynamic mask stimulus same retinal other eye. Orientation-specific irrelevant found eliminated with These...

This work investigates cluster labeling enhancement by utilizing Wikipedia, the free on-line encyclopedia. We describe a general framework for that extracts candidate labels from Wikipedia in addition to important terms are extracted directly text. The "labeling quality" of each is then evaluated several independent judges and top candidates recommended labeling.

Two relatively independent lines of research have addressed the role prefrontal cortex in emotional processing. The first examines hemispheric asymmetries frontal function; second focuses on interactions between cognition and emotion. We briefly review each perspective highlight inconsistencies them. go to describe an alternative model that integrates approaches by focusing asymmetry inhibitory executive control processes. asymmetric inhibition proposes right-lateralized inhibits processing...

The authors manipulated type (standard vs. a more realistic version) and time test (immediate delayed) examined their effects on Guilty Knowledge Test (GKT) recall rate relevant items. results indicated that only affected 2 outcome variables. associated with lower weaker detection efficiency than procedure. However, these were mediated by GKT questions...

Web sites today serve many different functions, such as corporate sites, search engines, e-stores, and so forth. As are created for purposes, their structure connectivity characteristics vary. However, this research argues that of similar role exhibit structural patterns, the functionality a site naturally induces typical hyperlinked patterns to from rest Web. Thus, is reflected in set connectivity-based features form signature. In paper, we automatically categorize into eight distinct...

Enhanced sensitivity to information of negative (compared positive) valence has an adaptive value, for example, by expediting the correct choice avoidance behavior. However, previous evidence such enhanced been inconclusive. Here we report a clear advantage over positive words in categorizing them as emotional. In 3 experiments, participants classified briefly presented (33 ms or 22 ms) masked emotional neutral.Categorization accuracy and valence-detection were both higher than words.The...

Each of our eyes normally sees a slightly different image the world around us. The brain can combine these two images into single coherent representation. However, when are presented with that sufficiently from each other, an interesting thing happens: Rather than fusing combined conscious percept, what transpires is pattern perceptual alternations where one dominates awareness while other suppressed; dominance alternates between images, typically every few seconds. This phenomenon known as...

Attending to emotional stimuli is often beneficial, because they provide important social and environmental cues. Sometimes, however, current goals require that we ignore them. To what extent can control distraction? Here show the ability distractions depends on type of cognitive engaged. Participants completed a simple perceptual task at fixation while irrelevant images appeared peripherally. In 2 experiments, manipulated proportion trials in which appeared, encourage use either reactive...

Is consciousness required for high level cognitive processes, or can the unconscious mind perform tasks that are as complex and difficult as, example, understanding a sentence? Recent work has argued that, yes, can: Sklar et al. (2012) found sentences, masked from using technique of continuous flash suppression (CFS), broke into awareness more rapidly when their meanings were unusual emotionally negative, even though processing sentences' meaning unconsciously combining each word's meaning....

It has recently been suggested that visual spatial attention can only affect consciously perceived events. We measured the effects of sustained on orientation-selective adaptation to gratings, rendered invisible by prolonged interocular suppression. Spatial augmented adaptor orientation. The effect was clearest for test stimuli at peri-threshold, intermediate contrast levels, suggesting previous negative results were due assessing orientation discrimination maximum contrast. On basis these...

The dynamics of perceptual bistability, the phenomenon in which perception switches between different interpretations an unchanging stimulus, are characterised by very similar properties across a wide range qualitatively paradigms. This suggests that switching may be triggered some common source. However, it is also possible arise from distributed system, whose components vary according to specifics experiences involved. Here we used visual and auditory task determine whether individuals...
