Abstract The Zagros Mountains, characterized by complex topography and three large drainage systems, harbor the endemic freshwater crab Potamon persicum in Iran. Our study delves into evolutionary history of P. persicum, utilizing two mitochondrial one nuclear marker. We collected 214 specimens from 24 localities, identifying 21 haplotypes grouped major lineages. Substantial differentiation exists between systems Historical demographic analysis revealed a significant decrease population size...

Abstract Aim Phylogeographic studies on a number of Western Palaearctic taxa imply that the southern Caspian Sea region served as refugium during Last Glacial Maximum ( LGM ). Nevertheless, biogeography terrestrial and freshwater organisms in this is poorly understood. By studying phylogeography species crab, we unravel location probable local refugia colonization patterns across topographically complex landscape. Location Southern region. Refugia are critical for the maintenance of biodiversity during periods Quaternary climatic oscillations. The long-term persistence refugial populations in a large continuous refugium has resulted homogenous pattern genetic structure among populations, while highly structured evolutionary lineages characterize restriction to smaller subrefugia. These mechanisms have identification hot spots within putative glacial refugia. We studied phylogeography Potamon ibericum (Brachyura: Potamidae)...

Climate change is known as an important threat to biodiversity, particularly for freshwater organisms they have limited dispersal ability. Freshwater crabs are ecologically macro-invertebrates and play a key role in their ecosystem. In this study we used ensemble approach using three machine learning methods (Generalised Boosted Models, Maximum Entropy modeling, Random Forest) assessed the impacts of climate on distribution eight (Potamon elbursi, P. fluviatile, hippocratis, ibericum,...

Abstract In the current study, we redescribe and revalidate a freshwater crab species of genus Potamon Savigny, 1816, from northern Iran. elbursi Pretzmann, 1962, differs it has been synonymised with, persicum mainly by shape first gonopods in males. Consistent marked genetic divergence was also recognised mitochondrial 16S rRNA cytochrome oxidase subunit I genes. This study elevates P. to rank therefore increases number valid total twenty-two.

The assessment of life history traits can help to better understand the population dynamics respective species. We present some freshwater crab Potamon ibericum (Bieberstein, 1809) from western Alborz Mountains, Iran. Carapace size at onset morphometric maturity was estimated using breakpoint relative growth chela and abdomen in males females, respectively, by implementing piecewise linear regressions. In order quantify variations breakpoint, a bootstrap resampling method applied. Allometric...

The current patterns of biodiversity have significantly been affected by glacial-interglacial cycles during the Pleistocene period. True freshwater crabs are considered as poor dispersers and terrestrial barriers restrict gene flow between their local populations. Recent studies, however, suggest that certain environmental conditions, such periods heavy rainfall humidity, can facilitate between-drainage dispersal will result in evolution homogenous genetic among different drainage systems....
