Several chemicals inhibit the accumulation of abnormal prion proteins in vitro. We administered one, antimalarial agent quinacrine, to three patients with sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and one iatrogenic CJD. Quinacrine at 300 mg/day was given enterally for 3 months. Within 2 weeks administration, arousal level patient akinetic mutism improved. The other patients, insensible before treatment, had integrative responses such as eye contact or voluntary movement response verbal...
Neurosin, a novel type of trypsin-like serine protease, has been shown to be preferentially expressed in human brain by northern blotting. We examined neurosin immunolabeling the brains neurologically normal persons and patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) Parkinson's disease. also identified expression mRNA for situ hybridization histochemistry reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The antibody stained all nuclei various cell types. In neurons, there was staining...
Using MRI, we investigated the morphology and blood-nerve barrier function of peripheral nerve trunk in 10 patients with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP). Eight had a focal demyelinative segment median or ulnar that was defined by conduction block abnormal temporal dispersion over short distance. These foci showed enlargement high signal intensity on proton T2-weighted images. In four progressive illness relapse, enlarged gadolinium enhancement disappeared during...
To investigate whether ataxia in Miller Fisher syndrome (MFS) is caused by loss of proprioception or cerebellar dysfunction, we studied the power spectrum peak body sway frequency 10 MFS patients, and compared results with those patients sensory ataxia. The had a at 2.4 Hz, whereas 1-Hz peak. Nine distinct Clinical abnormal nerve potentials were present only 3 soleus H-reflexes absent all patients. have dysfunction proprioceptive afferent system, special may be selective involvement muscle...
Hypersensitivity syndrome, a serious systematic reaction to limited number of drugs, is associated with the reactivation human herpesvirus 6. A 56-year-old man developed acute limbic encephalitis followed by multiple organ failure during course toxic dermatitis induced aromatic anticonvulsants. The clinical features skin eruptions, high fever, eosinophilia, and atypical lymphocytosis were compatible drug hypersensitivity syndrome. patient showed seroconversion for 6, polymerase chain...
Abstract Carbonyl addition compounds of diethyl trimethylsilyl phosphite (DTMSP) with aldehydes were converted, by treatment lithium diisopropylamide (LDA) followed the successive alkylation and alkaline hydrolysis, to carbonyl derivatives involving aldehydes, unsymmetrical ketones, β,γ-unsaturated carboxylic acids. β-Substituted esters γ-substituted lactones prepared use DTMSP α,β-unsaturated aldehydes.
Here, we show that silicon carbide (SiC) complementary logic gates composed of p- and n-channel junction field-effect transistors (JFETs) fabricated by ion implantation operate at 623 K with a supply voltage as low 1.4 V. The threshold shift the JFET (CJFET) inverter is only 0.2 V from 300 to K. Furthermore, temperature dependencies static dynamic characteristics CJFET are well explained simple analytical model SiC JFETs.
Several researchers have studied the longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) of eyes implanted with an intraocular lens (IOL). We investigated LCA yellow-colored IOLs from three different manufacturers: Alcon Inc., HOYA Corp., and AMO Inc. The number subjects was 11, 16, respectively. SN60WF SN60AT (Alcon Inc.), XY-1 (HOYA Corp.), same as that phakic eyes. ZCB00V (AMO Inc.) smaller than Alcon's HOYA's IOLs, but not AMO's positively correlated powers IOLs. also performed simulations to verify...
We demonstrate normally-off 400 °C operation of n-channel and p-channel junction field-effect transistors (JFETs) fabricated by an ion implantation into a common high-purity semi-insulating silicon carbide (SiC) substrate. The side-gate structure proposed in this letter has good controllability threshold voltage. present results assure the potential JFET-based complementary logic integrated circuits (ICs) operational at high temperature.
We have used peristimulus time histograms to study how paired, transcranial magnetic stimulation alters the firing of single motor units and magnitude unitary excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) recorded from extensor digitorum communis muscle. With stimulus intensity at threshold an interstimulus interval 30 ms, normal subjects (n = 20) demonstrated marked inhibition with a mean test/conditioning EPSP ratio 13.8% (range 0-51%) in 7 was 0 (100% inhibition). In amyotrophic lateral...
Eight patients with midline cervical disc protrusion at the C3-4 intervertebral level showed unusual clinical signs: numbness in finger tips and palms, clumsiness of hands, a tightening sensation midthoracic level. The proprioceptive cutaneous sensory afferents essential for motor control upper limbs were preferentially involved, tactile discrimination passively given stimuli being spared. Somatosensory evoked potentials subsequent to median nerve stimulation conduction failure through...
Abstract Dehydrogenative condensation of trihydrosilanes is catalyzed by (C5Me5)2NdCH(SiMe3)2 to give polysilanes in high yields. In the polymerization PhSiH3, molecular weight polymer becomes higher with an increase reaction temperature. Cyclic structures are indicated for oligomers larger than pentamers FD-MS spectroscopy.
We studied excitatory postsynaptic potentials (EPSPs) arising in single spinal motoneurons (composite EPSPs) induced by Ia afferent and magnetic cortical stimulation 28 normal subjects ranging age from 24 to 84 years patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) aged 34 82 years. The voluntarily recruited motor units of the first dorsal interosseous muscle. Using peristimulus time histograms, we determined changes firing probability measured magnitude EPSP. An early period increased...
Abstract We report a patient with primary ulnar entrapment neuropathy in the midarm. Stimulation of multiple sites along nerve showed motor conduction block at distance 7.5–10 cm proximal to medial epicondyle, where was compressed by intermuscular septum. Anatomically, possibility this segment has long been suggested, and stimulation least 10 above epicondyle may reveal entrapment. Muscle Nerve 39: 707–710, 2009
The frequency of writing errors in samples from 14 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis without manifest aphasia were compared clinical background and indices X-ray computed tomography, including the Evans’ index (EI) cella media (CMI). inferior horn (IHI) was measured as maximal width short axis bilateral ventricles/the maximum transverse distance between two internal laminae. Overt dementia disinhibitive behavioral changes significantly associated total (p = 0.0280) kanji 0.0025)....
Several researchers studied the longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) of human eye and observed that it does not change due to age. We measured LCA 45 subjects' normal right eyes at three distinct wavelengths (561, 690, 840 nm) using a Hartmann-Shack wavefront aberrometer (HSWA) while consecutively switching between light sources for sensing. confirmed age 22 57 years.
We describe a patient with acute encephalomyeloradiculitis associated herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and we also review 4 similar cases previously reported from Japan. A 59-year-old man presented encephalitis urinary retention. Initially, coma CSF pleocytosis improved acyclovir treatment, but brain stem encephalitis, transverse myelitis, lumbosacral polyradiculitis subsequently occurred. These conditions responded to corticosteroid therapy...
