Reducing the burden of death due to infection is an urgent global public health priority. Previous studies have estimated number deaths associated with drug-resistant infections and sepsis found that remain a leading cause globally. Understanding common bacterial pathogens (both susceptible resistant antimicrobials) essential identify greatest threats health. To our knowledge, this first study present comprehensive estimates 33 across 11 major infectious syndromes.

Brillouin-scattering measurements show an anomalous dip in the elastic constants of Nb/Cu superlattices for superlattice wavelengths \ensuremath{\lesssim} 100 \AA{}. This is correlated with changes electrical resistivity samples giving first evidence that electronic effects are responsible phonon softening these materials.

The temperature and angular dependence of critical fields (${H}_{c}$) have been studied as a function layer thickness for superconducting Nb/Cu superlattices. For thicknesses between 100 300 \AA{}, dimensional crossover has observed in the ${H}_{c}$. Associated with we find change ${H}_{c}$ to that given by effective-mass theory. This is first time relationship found fields.

The transition from a positive to negative temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR) has been studied in the artificially layered metallic system Nb-Cu. We find TCR undergo rather sudden change sign as layer thickness is decreased below approximately 10 \AA{}. dependence conductivity nonmetallic regime can be explained by localization-type theories, and implies that both localization Coulomb effects are important this purely three-dimensional system.
