Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) levels were measured at presentation to the hospital in 15 children with proven bacterial meningitis (BM) pretreated antibiotics. CRP exceeded upper normal limit of 19 mg/1 all cases; mean value was 195 (range, 55 375 mg/1). On other hand, 12 patients viral or meningoencephalitis. Rapid determination serum should be performed whenever BM is suspected.

A nationwide epidemiological survey on invasive (blood and/or CSF culture positive) Haemophilus influenzae (HI) and meningococcal infections was performed in Finland 1976–1980. The mean annual incidence of HI infection 3.4/100 000 inhabitants (813 cases) vs. 2.0/100 (469 infection. showed no geographical predilection, but disease, mainly group B, more common northern than southern (p<0.005). Meningitis accounted for 61% the 91% infections. overall fatality rates were 3.1% 7.9%, respectively....

A multivariate method for prognosticating the outcome of bacterial meningitis was computerized on basis initial clinical and laboratory data in 123 patients. The model, based likelihood ratios, is simple rapid. At time diagnosis, it predicted correctly 104/123 cases (85%) basic group 67/98 independent controls (68%). sensitivity predicting death or mild to severe neurological sequelae 83% both groups. predictive value a calculated good prognosis 94% 97% control group, that poor 63% 26%,...

HHV-6 infection has been associated with neurological symptoms in children. Two variants of human herpes virus 6, HHV-6A and HHV-6B, have identified. Their role infections is poorly understood. We studied 53 children suspected encephalitis for (strain GS) HHV-6B Z29) antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence test. Primary was separated from past by IgG-avidity The identified primary were specific DNA PCR. Forty-one had IgG to HHV-6. Six low avidity indicating acute infection; four type...

Abstract Background Mulibrey nanism (MUL) is a rare growth restriction disorder with multiple organ manifestations caused by genetic defects affecting the TRIM37 protein. A perimyocardial heart disease most serious manifestation. Many MUL children appear to suffer from airway obstruction related infection or exercise, prompting use of inhaled therapies. Asthma medication continued up adolescence even adulthood due persisting symptoms. The pulmonary pathophysiology has previously not been...

This is a brief report of the etiology infectious diseases in pediatric emergency department. Our cohort study 4647 children demonstrated rhinovirus as most common department (23%) and intensive care (48%). The population-based incidence rhinovirus-related visits was 1796/100,000/yr <5 years. bacterial pathogen Escherichia coli (5%).

298 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples obtained from 116 children with ongoing Haemophilus influenzae meningitis were analyzed in order to determine the kinetics of white blood cell (WBC) count and glucose protein concentrations—parameters for which there are no “reference values” available convalescence period meningitis. The values determined during first 10 days treatment presented as percentile distribution graphs. CSF WBC counts increased slightly 24 h but declined thereafter without...
