Although the application of sequencing-by-synthesis techniques to DNA extracted from bones has revolutionized study ancient DNA, it been plagued by large fractions contaminating environmental DNA. The genetic analyses hair shafts could be a solution: We present 10 previously unexamined Siberian mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) mitochondrial genomes, sequenced with up 48-fold coverage. observed levels damage-derived sequencing errors were lower than those in published frozen bone samples, even...
The causes of the late Pleistocene megafaunal extinctions are poorly understood. Different lines evidence point to climate change, arrival humans, or a combination these events as trigger. Although many species went extinct, others, such caribou and bison, survived present. musk ox has an intermediate story: relatively abundant during Pleistocene, it is now restricted Greenland Arctic Archipelago. In this study, we use ancient DNA sequences, temporally unbiased summary statistics, Bayesian...
By amplifying the melanocortin type 1 receptor from woolly mammoth, we can report complete nucleotide sequence of a nuclear-encoded gene an extinct species. We found two alleles and show that one allele produces functional protein whereas other encodes with strongly reduced activity. This finding suggests mammoths may have been polymorphic in coat color, both dark- light-haired individuals co-occurring.
Lions were the most widespread carnivores in late Pleistocene, ranging from southern Africa to USA, but little is known about evolutionary relationships among these Pleistocene populations or dynamics that led their extinction. Using ancient DNA techniques, we obtained mitochondrial sequences 52 individuals sampled across present and former range of lions. Phylogenetic analysis revealed three distinct clusters: (i) modern lions, Panthera leo; (ii) extinct cave which formed a homogeneous...
We report five new complete mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) genomes of Siberian woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ), sequenced with up to 73-fold coverage from extracted hair shaft material. Three the sequences present first mtDNA clade II. Analysis these and 13 recently published demonstrates existence two apparently sympatric clades that exhibit high interclade divergence. The analytical power afforded by analysis reveals a surprisingly ancient coalescence age clades, ≈1–2 million years,...
The scientific literature contains many examples where DNA sequence analyses have been used to provide definitive answers phylogenetic problems that traditional (non-DNA based) approaches alone failed resolve. One notable example concerns the rhinoceroses, a group for which several contradictory phylogenies were proposed on basis of morphology, then apparently resolved using mitochondrial fragments. In this study we report first complete genome sequences extinct ice-age woolly rhinoceros...
Cryolithological, ground ice and fossil bioindicator (pollen, diatoms, plant macrofossils, rhizopods, insects, mammal bones) records from Bol'shoy Lyakhovsky Island permafrost sequences (73°20′N, 141°30′E) document the environmental history in region for past c . 115 kyr. Vegetation similar to modern subarctic tundra communities prevailed during Eemian/Early Weichselian transition with a climate warmer than present. Sparse tundra‐like vegetation harsher conditions were predominant Early...
Archaeologists often argue whether Paleolithic works of art, cave paintings in particular, constitute reflections the natural environment humans at time. They also debate extent to which these actually contain creative artistic expression, reflect phenotypic variation surrounding environment, or focus on rare phenotypes. The famous “The Dappled Horses Pech-Merle,” depicting spotted horses walls a Pech-Merle, France, date back ∼25,000 y, but coat pattern portrayed is remarkably similar known...
Permafrost deposits were studied along the Olenyeksky and Arinsky distributaries in western Lena delta using a multidisciplinary approach that included sedimentological, mineralogical, stable-isotope, paleoecological analyses order to reconstruct Late Quaternary landscape environmental history of this Northeast
Molecular dynamics simulations have been carried out for ethanolamine as a pure liquid and in aqueous solution at 298 333 K. The force field has parametrized to reproduce intramolecular energies from quantum mechanical calculations experimentally determined properties of the liquid. results are presented conformer distributions, density, enthalpy vaporization, self-diffusion constant, dielectric radial distribution functions. strongly suggest that main (O-C-C-N) dihedral tends stay its...
Non-glaciated Arctic lowlands in north-east Siberia were subjected to extensive landscape and environmental changes during the Late Quaternary. Coastal cliffs along shelf seas expose terrestrial archives containing numerous palaeoenvironmental indicators (e.g., pollen, plant macro-fossils mammal fossils) preserved permafrost. The presented sedimentological (grain size, magnetic susceptibility biogeochemical parameters), cryolithological, geochronological (radiocarbon, accelerator mass...
Abstract Near the end of Pleistocene epoch, populations woolly mammoth ( Mammuthus primigenius ) were distributed across parts three continents, from western Europe and northern Asia through Beringia to Atlantic seaboard North America. Nonetheless, questions about connectivity temporal continuity species remain unanswered. We use a combination targeted enrichment high-throughput sequencing assemble interpret data set 143 mitochondrial genomes, sampled fossils recovered their Holarctic range....
A phase field theory with model parameters evaluated from atomistic simulations/experiments is applied to predict the nucleation and growth rates of solid CO(2) hydrate in aqueous solutions under conditions typical underwater natural gas reservoirs. It shown that practical a homogeneous can be ruled out. The rate dendrites has been determined simulations as function composition while using physical interface thickness (0.85+/-0.07 nm) molecular dynamics simulations. extrapolated realistic...
