Summary Histologic sections and case histories from 23 dogs with proven fatal toxoplasmosis-like illness at the Angell Memorial Animal Hospital were reviewed. Toxoplasma gondii was identified in 13 dogs. A newly parasite, Neospora caninum, structurally distinct T , found 10 The discovered organism, belonging to a new genus species, formed meronts many tissues of dogs, especially brain spinal cord. caninum located directly host cell cytoplasm without parasitophorous vacuole; it divided by...
Neospora caninum infection was diagnosed in 5 young dogs from 2 litters with a common parentage. The pups were born healthy, but developed hind limb paresis to 8 weeks after birth. predominant lesions polyradiculoneuritis and granulomatous polymyositis. seen microscopically sections of naturally infected pups, isolated cell cultures, mice, inoculated canine tissues. Antibodies N detected sera by indirect fluorescent antibody test.
Isospora-type oocysts were excreted by cats following the ingestion of Toxoplasma fromn infected mice. Oocysts appeared 3 to 5 days after cyst. ingested and 8 10 trophozoites ingested, also 21 24 administration infective fecal suspensions from cats. A close quanititative biologic correlation between infectivity feces was observed which could not be separated density gradient centrifugation filtration methods. is an intestinal coccidian fecally spread. It has evolved multiply in brain muscle...
The highly prevalent parasite Toxoplasma gondii manipulates its host's behavior. In infected rodents, the behavioral changes increase likelihood that will be transmitted back to definitive cat host, an essential step in completion of parasite's life cycle. mechanism(s) responsible for host is unknown but two lines published evidence suggest alters neurotransmitter signal transduction: disruption parasite-induced with medications used treat psychiatric disease (specifically dopamine...
