1. Although a female preference for pairing with brightly plumaged males has been reported in many species, the reasons this choice are not fully understood. 2. Parasites have proposed as playing an important role shaping these preferences because, by coloured individuals, females can obtain parasite‐free and/or more healthy mates. 3. In paper one of predictions hypothesis is tested, namely higher health level analysing relationships among blood parasites, leucocyte levels and plumage...
Two horses with acute tendinopathy of a superficial digital flexor tendon ( sdft ) and three chronic proximal desmitis the suspensory ligament pdsl were treated by injecting autologous concentrates their platelets into lesions. The lesions monitored ultrasonographically clinically. There significant ultrasonographic clinical improvements in two , but no ; however, they improved clinically became less lame. All had returned to pre‐injury level performance six months after completion...
The medical records of 468 horses that underwent 490 exploratory laparotomies for the correction gastrointestinal diseases were reviewed to search differences between Andalusian and other breeds. seasonal distribution surgical colics their outcome complications also investigated. Bivariant analysis was used compare horses' age, gender breed with type surgery, bowel affected colic, all these variables compared in relation euthanasia during complications, short‐term survival distribution. A...
Abstract A 4‐year‐old Andalusian horse was presented for examination following a 3‐month history of exophthalmos the right eye and soft swelling supraorbital fossa noted after blunt head trauma. Ultrasonographic showed an anecogenic mass 5 cm in diameter involving retrobulbar space. Centesis through performed yielded serous fluid with 7.2 g/dL total protein density 1040. No cells were seen sample. tentative diagnosis cyst made. The surgically removed definitive histologic dermoid cyst....
Blood samples from birds of prey, 95 Strigiformes and 190 Falconiformes, were examined for the presence haematozoan parasites. The had been admitted to a raptor recovery centre in Catalonia, north‐east Spain. Parasites counted positive smears. A second blood sample was obtained 99 at least seven days after their arrival centre. Haematozoa detected all species nine 19 Falconiformes. overall prevalences two groups significantly different, 30.5 per cent 46.3 noctumal diumal raptors,...
We report the presence of avian piroplasm Babesia shortti in a common kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) admitted wildlife recovery centre Catalonia, Spain. The bird, which was very poor condition and had respiratory distress, anaemic (packed cell volume 22%). animal died within days. No postmortem examination performed, but extremely high parasitaemia almost 45% anaemia might have caused death.
Summary Background Reports describing short‐ and long‐term postoperative complications outcomes after umbilical vein marsupialisation in foals are limited nondetailed. Objectives The objective of the study was to report surgical treatment, with infection or without liver abscessation treated vein. Study design Retrospective clinical study, short case series. Methods Medical records were reviewed (between 2014 2022, four referral centres) identify ( n = 11) that for remnant had surgery...
Budgerigars ( Melopsittacus undulatus ) from two different breeding colonies were found to have Giardia infection. Light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and in‐vitro in‐vivo studies confirmed the species was G psittaci . Chicks clinically affected showed signs of retarded growth, dehydration diarrhoea. The faeces adult birds treated with metronidazole in drinking water negative for 5 days after treatment. Megabacteria also but not treated. This study extends known host range...
A hybrid passerine (Serinus canarius xCarduelis cannabina) in poor bodily condition was presented for consultation but died during clinical examination. Examination of the faeces revealed presence oocysts that were assigned to those Isospora serini species. The sexual stages parasite found intestinal tract. Also, merozoites an Atoxoplasma (Syn. Lankesterella)-like detected mononuclear cells cardiac blood. These findings indicate a coccidiosis pattern consistent with atoxoplasmosis.
Summary Dorsal intratracheal laceration was diagnosed in a horse with severe subcutaneous emphysema. Due to the size of defect and severity symptoms, different methods were attempted close laceration. The use fibrin sealant is described together discussion about other potential treatments options for this rare condition horse.
Abstract Background The prevalence of dementia in Peru’s northern regions is poorly documented, largely due to the scarcity studies employing validated assessment tools for elderly. Notably, this area marked by pronounced disparities, encompassing a wide range socioeconomic statuses and predominantly low educational attainment. confluence risk factors, including deprivation, prevalent diseases, suboptimal health conditions, chronic stress, lifelong malnutrition, poses significant escalating...
Summary A 15‐year‐old Hanoverian gelding was admitted for evaluation of a firm, expansive mass about 5 cm in diameter, the horizontal ramus right mandible, between teeth 406 and 408. Histological examination revealed highly invasive ameloblastoma with severe secondary fibrosis. Resection tumour performed under general anaesthesia, 4.5 locking compression plate 14 holes placed over defect eight screws, filled Cerasorb M. The horse received radiation therapy dose 4.2 Gy every day 10...
Abstract Four horses were diagnosed with full‐thickness perforation of the stomach wall. Three them developed a mature abscess associated and one massive adhesions in area. The clinical laboratory findings diagnostic procedures are described together discussion about potential pathogenesis for these rare pathologies horses.
