Abstract Population matrix models are routinely used to study the demography of wild populations and guide management choices. When vital rates unknown for a specific population or life history stage, researchers often replace them with estimates from other same species. Such ‘hybrid’ matrices might ignore among‐population variation lead incorrect inferences. In this study, we examined real‐world effect using hybrid on demographic inference decisions, large dataset yellow‐bellied toad (...

The aim of the survey was to evaluate Toxoplasma gondii seroprevalence in small ruminants and possible risk factors associated with infection.Sera from 474 goats 502 sheep reared on 42 farms northern Italy were collected tested for IgG antibodies T. by IFAT (indirect immunofluorescence antibody test). To identify factors, a binary logistic regression analysis variables performed. An audit form about farm management used.Antibodies found 96.6% goat 87.5% farms; 41.7% 59.3% resulted positive....

Habitat anthropization is a major driver of global biodiversity decline. Although most species are negatively affected, some benefit from anthropogenic habitat modifications by showing intriguing life-history responses. For instance, increased recruitment through higher allocation to reproduction or improved performance during early-life stages could compensate for reduced adult survival, corresponding "compensatory recruitment". To date, evidence compensatory in response modification...

Intestinal parasites of dogs represent a serious threat to human health due their zoonotic potential. Thus, metropolitan areas presenting high concentrations pets and urban fecal contamination on public are at sanitary risk. Major aim this survey was determine prevalence in dog samples collected from soil Milan (north-western Italy). Differences distribution were explored by geographical information system- (GIS-) based approach, risk factors (human density, sizes green parks, areas)...

Abstract Two hundreds and sixty red foxes, eighteen badgers eight stone martens from north-eastern Italy were examined for zoonotic parasites by SCT, with particular attention to Trichinella sp. Echinococcus multilocularis. No adult worms of E. multilocularis observed in the intestine foxes or mustelids. Abstract The presence of Echinococcus sp. cysts was investigated in 822 sheep, 123 goats and 112,521 cattle from Lombardy region, North Italy. Faecal samples 40 sheepdogs were also analyzed, with 9 containing taeniid eggs (22.5 %), 8 being coproantigen-positive (20 one dog a northern province (Lecco) positively confirmed by PCR. Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) detected 0.36 % sheep 0.29 2004. No goat resulted to be infected. Data CE patients treated collected inspecting hospital discharge...

Abstract The study analyses the intestinal helminth communities found in 645 red foxes of alpine populations from five areas Northern Italy. In particular, aim was to evaluate contribution both environmental variability and structure fox population (extrinsic intrinsic factors, respectively) shaping composition communities. To identify influence characteristics host (i.e. age sex) together with extrinsic factors (year, site, season, altitude collection) on number species, total load per fox,...

Among the available diagnostic techniques, antibody detection in bulk tank milk (BTM) represents a useful tool to estimate and monitor Neospora caninum herd prevalence. To evaluate prevalence of N. effect parasite infection on performances, BTM samples collected from 586 dairy herds located one largest production areas Italy (Lombardy) were analyzed by an indirect ELISA detect anti-N. specific antibodies. Findings of abnormally pigmented amphibian individuals provide interesting insights on intraspecific phenotypic variability as well variation among populations inhabiting different habitats. Amphibian coloration is determined by chromatophores (specific epidermal cells), and a variety abnormalities related to them have been reported. In this study we reported cases albinism leucism in six species Italian amphibians, including some endemic species. For taxa, like Hydromantes sarrabusensis, H....
