A serosurvey of IgG antibodies against severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was performed during March and April 2020. Among 6,586 leftover sera, 24 (0.36%) were positive, with higher prevalence in females, older individuals residents large urban areas. Seroprevalence estimated at 0.02% 0.25%, respectively, April, infection fatality rate 2.66% 0.54%. Our findings confirm low COVID-19 incidence Greece possibly the effectiveness early measures.
The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to significant progress in field wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) respiratory pathogens and highlighted its potential for a wider application public health surveillance. This study aimed evaluate whether monitoring syncytial virus (RSV) wastewater can provide comprehensive picture disease transmission at community level. was conducted Larissa (Central Greece) between October 2022 January 2023. Forty-six samples were collected from inlet...
The estimation of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies is possibly the best approach to accurately establish number infected individuals and seroprevalence COVID-19 within a population. Thus, several commercial immunoassays have recently been developed. purpose our study was assess performance five commonly used in Greece (3 ELISA, namely Euroimmun SARS-CoV-2, GA GENERIC SARS-CoV-2 Vircell COVID-19; 2 chemiluminescent, ABBOTT ROCHE Elecsys Anti-SARS-CoV-2 test) for detection antibodies. Sera...
A COVID-19 outbreak occurred among residents of a Roma settlement in Greece (8 April–4 June 2020). The aim this study was to identify factors associated with an increased risk severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and evaluate the effectiveness control measures implemented. Data were analyzed from individuals that tested for SARS-CoV-2 during contact tracing, population screening or hospital visits. RT-PCR used detection oropharyngeal samples. Risk household...
The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants concern (VOCs) during the COVID-19 pandemic necessitates investigation into their clinical differentiation and outcomes. This study aimed to examine these differences among VOCs, considering multiple related factors. An observational cohort was conducted on patients diagnosed with infection via nasopharyngeal/oropharyngeal swab who visited emergency department a public Greek hospital between October 2020 July 2022 different VOC circulation in region. Data...
Accurate data on susceptibility rates against measles in general population of Greece are scarce. Many studies estimate the vaccination coverage but none has calculated nationwide immunity rate, involving all age groups, virus. The purpose our study was to determine status measles, especially after latest outbreak 2017-2018. In total, 3,972 leftover blood samples were collected from a laboratory network using geograph-ically stratified sampling strategy and tested for presence specific IgG...
During the post-coronavirus disease (COVID-19) era, a primary question is whether booster vaccination effective against severe COVID-19 and should be recommended, particularly to individuals at high risk for (i.e., elderly or those with additional comorbidities). From December 2020 February 2023, cohort study was conducted estimate IgG IgA immunogenicity dynamics of mono- bivalent mRNA vaccines in 260 (male/female: 114/146, median age: 68 years, interquartile range (IQR) = 31) who initially...
Introduction: Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are convenient for SARS-CoV-2 detection because they simpler and faster than nucleic acid amplification (NAATs). This study aimed to assess the accuracy of a locally manufactured test; Test Ag 2019-nCoV (PROGNOSIS, BIOTECH, Larissa, Greece) in clinical setting during mass screening. Methods: Nasopharyngeal samples from 624 individuals were analyzed. The results rapid test compared real-time reverse-transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction...
Abstract We investigated a large gastroenteritis outbreak that occurred in Northern Greece 2019. A case was defined as anyone presenting with diarrhoea and/or vomiting from 24 January 2019 to 04 February conducted case-control study (CCS) using random selection of participants >16 years age, residents town X, who visited the health care centre between 25 and 28 Moreover, we retrospective cohort (CS) at four elementary schools town. collected clinical water samples supply system inspected....

A serosurvey of IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was conducted in Greece between May and August 2020. It designed as a cross-sectional survey repeated at monthly intervals. The leftover sampling methodology used geographically stratified plan applied. Of 20,110 serum samples collected, 89 (0.44%) were found to be positive for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, with higher seroprevalence (0.35%) observed highest primarily the "30-49" year age group. Females presented compared males 2020 (females:...
During the 2018-2019 influenza season in central Greece, 388 respiratory samples were collected from children presented with symptoms and tested for detection of viruses. Real-time RT-PCR testing revealed presence A (H1N1) (pdm09), (H3N2), seasonal (H1N1), B All found negative A(H5) HA gene sequence. The majority viruses detected type (90%), which majority, (61%), (pdm09) viruses, indicating that these dominant subtype circulating Greece during winter early spring aforementioned season.
Nation-wide SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence surveys provide valuable insights into the course of pandemic, including information often not captured by routine surveillance reported cases.A serosurvey IgG antibodies against was conducted in Greece between March and December 2020. It designed as a cross-sectional survey repeated at monthly intervals. The leftover sampling methodology used geographically stratified plan applied.Of 55,947 serum samples collected, 705 (1.26%) were found positive for...
Despite the significant medical advances which have taken place in last decades, acute diarrhoea cases remain a public health issue of major significance, with gastroenteritis agents being associated severe symptoms adults and high morbidity infants children. Regarding rotaviruses, while children are predominant victims rotavirus infection, (often caretakers or parents these children) may experience same fever, vomiting, non-bloody diarrhoea. Three different routine schemes for detection...
In this study, we compare the degree of antibiotic resistance between E. coli strains isolated from swine faecal and farm workers. Resistance in nine widely used antibiotics was assessed by determination Minimum Inhibitory Concentration. Sixty-four out 72 isolates derived pigs sixty workers showed to at least one antibiotic. High tetracycline, ampicillin amoxicillin detected both human isolates, showing similar patterns. This finding indicates that use pig industry increased animal also...
This study evaluated the usefulness and validity of wastewater SARS-CοV-2 monitoring in passenger ships. Wastewater grab samples (n = 54) were collected from seven cruise ships arriving at port Piraeus June to November 2021. Samples analyzed for presence SARS-CoV-2 RNA with an RT-PCR based method. Results compared against number cases detected on before arrival. It was demonstrated that sewage can detect SARS-CoV-2, even few board. Future efforts should focus collection more representative...
