Between 1 June 2016 and 31 May 2017, 17 European Union (EU) Economic Area countries reported 4,096 cases associated with a multi-country hepatitis A (HA) outbreak. Molecular analysis identified three co-circulating virus (HAV) strains of genotype IA: VRD_521_2016, V16–25801 RIVM-HAV16–090. We categorised as confirmed, probable or possible, according to the EU outbreak case definitions. Confirmed were infected one strains. investigated characteristics strain-specific risk factors for...
Non-polio human enteroviruses are the leading cause of aseptic meningitis in children. The role enterovirus PCR for diagnosis and management has not been fully explored.A retrospective study was conducted to determine epidemiological, clinical, laboratory characteristics evaluate this clinical entity. medical records children who had as discharge or viral were reviewed. A total 506 children, median age 5 years, identified. annual incidence rate estimated be 17/100,000 less than 14 years age....
A questionnaire survey on the attitude of healthcare workers towards pandemic influenza vaccination showed low acceptance (17%) vaccine. Factors associated with vaccine uptake were seasonal vaccination, medical profession and age. The main reason for refusal was fear side effects, which stronger in those who received information safety mainly from mass media.
Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are common in children and represent a significant cause of antibiotic abuse which contributes to the development resistance. A survey was conducted Cyprus 2006 assess parents’ pediatricians’ Knowledge, Attitude Practices (KAP) concerning role antibiotics with URTIs. school-based stratified geographic clustering sampling used pre-tested KAP questionnaire distributed. different distributed paediatricians. Demographic factors associated misuse were...
We compared six colistin susceptibility testing (ST) methods on 61 carbapenem-nonsusceptible Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 41) and Acinetobacter baumannii 20) clinical isolates with provisionally elevated MICs by routine ST. Colistin were determined broth microdilution (BMD), BMD 0.002% polysorbate 80 (P80) (BMD-P80), agar dilution (AD), Etest, Vitek2, MIC test strip (MTS). was used as the reference method for comparison. The EUCAST-recommended susceptible resistant breakpoints of ≤2 >2 μg/ml,...
Abstract Background Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are common in children. The cause of URTIs is usually viral, but parents' attitudes often contribute to inappropriate prescription antibiotics, promoting antibiotic resistance. objective this study was document and analyse parental beliefs on use for children with Greece, a country high levels Methods A knowledge-attitude-practice questionnaire developed distributed Greek parents caring who were 5-6 years old, between January...
Objectives There is a controversy about the impact of economic crisis on suicide rates in Greece. We analysed recent data to identify who has been most affected and relationships labour market indicators. Setting Primary secondary outcome measures Age-specific sex-specific Greece for period 2003–2012 were calculated using provided by Hellenic Statistical Authority. performed join-point analysis discontinuities trends between 2003 2010, prior austerity, 2011–2012, during austerity. Regression...
The aim of the present study was to investigate ability breath analysis distinguish lung cancer (LC) patients from with other respiratory diseases and healthy people. population sample consisted 51 confirmed LC, 38 pathological computed tomography (CT) findings not diagnosed 53 controls. concentrations 19 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were quantified in exhaled participants by solid phase microextraction (SPME) VOCs subsequent gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis....
Throughout the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, countries have relied on a variety of ad hoc border control protocols to allow for non-essential travel while safeguarding public health, from quarantining all travellers restricting entry select nations basis population-level epidemiological metrics such as cases, deaths or testing positivity rates1,2. Here we report design and performance reinforcement learning system, nicknamed Eva. In summer 2020, Eva was deployed across Greek...
In this study, the content composition and antioxidant activity of goji berry fruits from two species (Lycium barbarum Lycium chinense) were assessed. The total carbohydrate phenolic contents evaluated using attenuated reflection Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FT-IR) spectroscopy, while was examined with in vitro methods, which are based on scavenging 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH•) 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethyl-benzthiazoline-sulfonic acid) (ABTS•⁺) free radicals. fatty-acid profile...
The occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in marine fish and market areas was investigated. Two hundred eighty-eight samples (123 environmental samples—siphons, knives, cutting boards, floor, sinks, water, ice—and 165 samples) were examined. Twenty-four isolates characterized as (five from (4.0%) 19 (11.5%)). strains further according to their antibiotic resistance, pathogenicity, biofilm formation ability. They molecularly serotyped IIc (n = 22) IVb 2) possessed all the virulence genes...

The objective of our study was to evaluate the psychological consequences real-world AAS use in athletes abusing such agents, comparison with a placebo and control group comparable athletes, while correlating severity abuse side effects observed. hypothesis tested by that induces wide range whose impact emergence is dependent upon abuse. The includes substantial two more groups demographically similar first, one composed not using any substance group. All were stratified according abuse....
The aim of this study was to assess the antioxidant and antimutagenic activities ultrasound assisted aqueous extracts from dry goji berry fruits cultivated in Greece. extracts' free radical scavenging activity assessed by DPPH ABTS+ assays. results both assays demonstrated that exhibited strong with IC50 values ranging 1.29 3.00 mg/ml for 0.39 1.10 mg/mL assay. investigated also inhibited radical-induced DNA damage induced peroxyl (ROO) radicals 0.69 6.90 mg/mL. Τhe extract highest potency...
The burden of disease due to chronic viral hepatitis constitutes a global threat. In many Balkan and Mediterranean countries, the remains largely unrecognized, including in high-risk groups migrants, because lack reliable epidemiological data, suggesting need for better targeted surveillance public health gains. liver B C is increasing ageing unvaccinated populations migration, probable increase drug injecting. Targeted vaccination strategies virus (HBV) among risk harm reduction...
Greece has been seriously affected by the economic crisis. In 2011 there were reports of 40% reduction to public hospital budgets.Occasional shortages medical supplies have reported in mass media. We attempted pivotally investigate frequency two Greek units National Health System and also assess their possible impact on burnout risk health care workers. We conducted a cross-sectional study (n=303) workers hospitals who present at workplace during casually selected working day (morning shift...
A serosurvey of IgG antibodies against severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was performed during March and April 2020. Among 6,586 leftover sera, 24 (0.36%) were positive, with higher prevalence in females, older individuals residents large urban areas. Seroprevalence estimated at 0.02% 0.25%, respectively, April, infection fatality rate 2.66% 0.54%. Our findings confirm low COVID-19 incidence Greece possibly the effectiveness early measures.
