Acorn worms, also known as enteropneust (literally, 'gut-breathing') hemichordates, are marine invertebrates that share features with echinoderms and chordates. Together, these three phyla comprise the deuterostomes. Here we report draft genome sequences of two acorn Saccoglossus kowalevskii Ptychodera flava. By comparing them diverse bilaterian genomes, identify shared traits were probably inherited from last common deuterostome ancestor, then explore evolutionary trajectories leading this...

SUMMARY Using the Hawaiian acorn worm, Ptychodera flava , we began molecular studies on development of hemichordates, a phylum previously unstudied at this level. Here review results garnered from examination few specific genes selected to help understand evolution vertebrate structures. These suggest new ideas about developmental mechanisms in deuterostomes. We have identified and characterized the sequence expression of two Group B Sox genes in acorn worm, Ptychodera flava. One represents a B1 gene is designated Pf-SoxB1; other B2 Pf-SoxB2. Both encode polypeptides with an HMG domain N-terminal half. Whole-mount situ hybridization to embryonic larval stages P. flava shows that are expressed rather similar patterns at these stages. Expression first detected cells blastula subsequently localizes ectoderm during gastrulation. As mouth forms,...

Abstract Background ParaHox and Hox genes are thought to have evolved from a common ancestral ProtoHox cluster or tandem duplication prior the divergence of cnidarians bilaterians. Similar clusters, chordate including Gsx , Xlox Cdx clustered their expression exhibits temporal spatial colinearity. In non-chordate animals, however, studies on genomic organization limited only few animal taxa. Hemichordates, such as Enteropneust acorn worms, been used gain insights into origins characters....

T-box genes encode a novel family of sequence-specific activators that appear to play crucial roles in various processes animal development. Although most the are involved mesoderm formation chordate embryos, mammalian T-Brain is expressed developing central nervous system, and defines molecularly distinct domains within cerebral cortex. Here we report first invertebrate homologue from hemichordate acorn worm, Ptychodera flava, which designate Pf-Tbrain. Developmental expression Pf-Tbrain...

The auricularia larva of sea cucumbers and tornaria acorn worms share striking developmental morphological similarities. SUMMARY Molecular and morphological comparisons indicate that the Echinodermata Hemichordata represent closely related sister‐phyla within Deuterostomia. Much less is known about development of hemichordates compared to other deuterostomes. Single blastomeres were iontophoretically labeled with DiI at 2‐ through 16‐cell stages, their fates...
