Abstract Xylem vulnerability to embolism represents an important trait determine species distribution patterns and drought resistance. However, estimating resistance frequently requires time‐consuming ambiguous hydraulic lab measurements. Based on a recently developed pneumatic method, we present test the “Pneumatron”, device that generates high time‐resolution fully automated curves. Embolism is estimated by applying partial vacuum extract air from excised xylem sample, while monitoring...
This work aimed to develop a protocol for the in vitro establishment, multiplication, rooting and ex acclimatization of Mimosa pudica L., species used folk medicine with pharmacological activity. Aseptic cultures were established from seeds inoculated MS medium, without growth regulators, followed by an stabilization phase culture medium supplemented 2.22 μM BAP. The transferred different cytokinins, combined or not auxin, aiming its large-scale propagation. 5 µM BAP plus 0.5 NAA...
In this study, the activities of antioxidant enzymes, photosynthetic pigments, proline and carbohydrate contents in Pitcairnia encholirioides under ex vitro conditions water deficit were evaluated. Results show that plants progressive stress, previously cultured media supplemented with 30 g L-1 sucrose GA3, accumulated more increased peroxidase (POD) activity pigments carbohydrates. For 15 NAA, no differences found for content there reductions (POD), catalase (CAT) poliphenoloxidase (PPO),...
Abstract Despite a long research history, we do not fully understand why plants are able to transport xylem sap under negative pressure without constant failure. Microbubble formation via direct gas entry is assumed cause hydraulic failure, while the concentration of dissolved in traditionally supposed be constant, following Henry’s law. Here, soluble was estimated vivo using well-watered Citrus varying levels air temperature and photoperiodic exposure, compared modelled data. The showed...
Increasing the efficiency of photosynthesis in sugarcane canopies is key for improving crop yield. Herein, we evaluated photosynthetic performance along canopy ten cultivars and three Saccharum species. Canopy morphological traits were evaluated, leaf gas exchange was measured first (sun-exposed, +1) fourth (shaded, +4) fully expanded leaves under low- high-light conditions. Similar capacity found +1 +4 high light genotypes with a area index fraction sky blocked by foliage (> 85%)....
Abstract Knowledge about the length of xylem vessels is essential to understand water transport in plants because these multicellular units show a 100-fold variation, from less than centimeter many meters. However, available methods estimate vessel distribution (VLD) are excessively time consuming and do not allow large in-depth surveys. Here, we describe semi-automated method measure VLD using an automated Pneumatron device. Gas conductivity tissue with certain estimated straightforward...
Abstract Energy cane ( Saccharum spp. hybrid) is a sustainable feedstock for the sucroenergetic sector due to its capacity of producing more biomass than sugarcane hybrid). As formed by carbohydrates, photosynthesis key physiological process understand production plants. Herein, one (IACSP95-5000) and two energy canes (Vertix 2 Vertix 3) genotypes were cultivated under greenhouse conditions evaluate photosynthetic top leaves measure actual all green main tiller. All showed similar maximum in...
