The $\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ system has been studied in the reaction ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\eta}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ at $18\mathrm{GeV}/c$. A large asymmetry angular distribution is observed indicating interference between $L$-even and $L$-odd partial waves. ${a}_{2}(1320)$ ${J}^{\mathrm{PC}}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}2}^{++}$ wave, as a broad enhancement 1.2...
A partial-wave analysis of the reaction ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ at $18\mathrm{GeV}/c$ has been performed on a data sample 250 000 events obtained by Brookhaven experiment E852. The expected ${J}^{\mathrm{PC}}{\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}=\phantom{\rule{0ex}{0ex}}1}^{++}{a}_{1}(1260)$, ${2}^{++}{a}_{2}(1320)$, and ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}_{2}(1670)$...
We have developed an extensive model of atmospheric ν interactions which provide the backgrounds to nucleon-decay experiments. report results from a 417-live-day exposure Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven detector. During this time 401 contained events were observed at rate and with characteristics consistent interactions. calculated expected variety two- three-body decay modes set lower limits on many nucleon partial lifetimes.Received 6 June...
Observations were made 1570 meters of water equivalent underground with an 8000-metric-ton Cherenkov detector. During a live time 80 d no events consistent the decay p→e+π0 found in fiducial mass 3300 metric tons. It is concluded that limit on lifetime for bound plus free protons divided by e+π0 branching ratio τB>6.5×1031 yr; τB>1.9×1031 yr (90% confidence). Observed cosmic-ray muons and neutrinos are compatible expectations.Received 13 April...
A partial-wave analysis of the mesons from reaction ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}p$ has been performed. The data show ${b}_{1}\ensuremath{\pi}$ decay spin-exotic states ${\ensuremath{\pi}}_{1}(1600)$ and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}_{1}(2000)$. Three isovector ${2}^{\ensuremath{-}+}$ were seen in...

A search for superheavy magnetic monopoles "catalyzing" nucleon decay via the reaction $M+N\ensuremath{\rightarrow}M+{e}^{+}+\mathrm{mesons}$ in an undergound water Cherenkov detector has been carried out. No positive evidence such a process found during 100 d of live time. Cross section and velocity-dependent limits on monopole flux are presented which as low ${F}_{m}<7.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}15}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$...
A 2.1 kton yr exposure of data from the Irvine-Michigan-Brookhaven detector has yielded 72 atmospheric neutrino events with a vertex contained inside fiducial volume and at least 0.95 GeV visible \ifmmode \check{C}\else \v{C}\fi{}erenkov energy. The ratio these two ratios $(\frac{\mathrm{muon}\mathrm{l}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{ke}}{\mathrm{tota}\mathrm{l}}{)}_{\mathrm{Data}}/(\frac{\mathrm{muon}\mathrm{l}\mathrm{i}\mathrm{ke}}{\mathrm{tota}\mathrm{l}}{)}_{\mathrm{MC}}$ was found to be...
The design and performance of a TOF system used in Fermilab collider experiment is evaluated terms time, mass, spatial resolution. designed to survive high rate background environment. overall time resolution the measured be σ = 110 ps.
A 3045 element lead glass calorimeter and an associated fast trigger processor have been constructed, tested implemented in BNL experiment E852 conjunction with the multi-particle spectrometer (MPS). Approximately, 109 all-neutral neutral plus charged triggers were recorded this apparatus during data runs 1994 1995. This paper reports on construction, testing performance of processor.
We discuss the effects of imperfect photon detectors suffering from loss and noise on reliability linear optical quantum computers. show that for a given detector efficiency, there is maximum achievable success probability, increasing number ancillary photons used one controlled sign flip gate beyond critical point will decrease probability computer function correctly. have also performed simulations some small logic gates estimate efficiency levels required to properly.
Lower partial-lifetime limits for the decay of free proton are obtained in range ${10}^{30}$ to ${10}^{32}$ yr, from a 417-d exposure water Cherenkov detector with fiducial mass 370 metric tons hydrogen. In this time, 401 contained events were observed, at rate consistent atmospheric neutrino interactions. Eleven these compatible both interactions and neutrinoless proton. These results same order magnitude as previously published bound plus protons, but independent models oxygen.
Observers have demonstrated that it is now feasible to measure the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature at high redshifts. We explore possible constraints on cosmology which might ultimately be derived from such measurements. In addition providing a consistency check standard and alternative cosmologies, possibilities include inhomogeneity anisotropy of universe intermediate redshift $z\ensuremath{\lesssim}10,$ an independent probe peculiar motions with respect Hubble flow,...
Abstract A device has been developed which is capable of doubling the light collection capability a 5 inch hemispherical photomultiplier tube. Known as “waveshifter plate”, its geometry adaptable to various applications. Its marginal cost small with respect that phototube, it readily removable, and minimum effect upon dark noise timing resolution.
Abstract A cylindrical multiwire drift chamber with axial charge-division has been constructed and used in experiment E852 at Brookhaven National Laboratory. It serves as a trigger element tracking device for recoil protons π p interactions. We describe the chamber's design considerations, details of its construction, electronics, performance characteristics.

An improved limit on the flux of magnetic monopoles in vicinity solar system is obtained, assuming that strongly catalyze nucleon decay (the Rubakov-Callan effect). Flux limits are presented for monopole velocities from ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}5}c$ to ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}1}c$ and monopole-nucleon cross sections between ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}27}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$ ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}21}$ ${\mathrm{cm}}^{2}$. For a representative velocity...
It has recently been widely recognized that a reactor anti-neutrino disappearance experiment with two or more detectors is one of the most cost-effective ways to extend our reach in sensitivity for neutrino mixing angle theta-13 without ambiguities from CP violation and matter effects. The physics capabilities new together superbeams factories have also studied but these latter are considered by many be ambitious projects due their higher costs, hence farther future. We propose contribute an...
