Recent experiments on the interaction of intense, ultrafast laser pulses with large van der Waals bonded clusters have shown that these can explode substantial kinetic energy. By driving explosions in deuterium a 35 fs pulse, we accelerated ions to sufficient energy produce DD nuclear fusion. diagnosing fusion yield through measurements 2.45 MeV neutrons, found from exploding varies strongly cluster size, consistent acceleration deuterons via Coulomb explosion forces.
We have developed and carried out detailed characterization of a cryogenically cooled (34–300 K), high-pressure (55 kTorr) solenoid driven pulsed valve that has been used to produce dense jets atomic clusters for high intensity laser interaction studies. Measurements including Rayleigh scattering short pulse interferometry show controlled size, from few >104 atoms/cluster can be produced broad range light heavy gases, at average densities up 4×1019 atoms/cc. Continuous temperature...

Recent experiments on the interaction of intense, ultrafast pulses with large van der Waals bonded clusters have shown that these can explode sufficient kinetic energy to drive nuclear fusion. Irradiating deuterium a 35 fs laser pulse, it is found fusion neutron yield strongly dependent such factors as cluster size, focal geometry, and gas jet parameters. Neutron be limited by propagation effects pulse traverses plume. From possible get detailed understanding how deposits its heats plasma....
Within the framework of boson parquet-diagram summations in perturbation theory, we show analytically that several simple approximations lead inevitably to radial distribution function $g(r)$ which would be obtained with Jastrow hypernetted-chain variational method. This is first derivation result from theory. Without mentioning pair-correlation functions, have a clear interpretation and structure function, $S(k)$, terms diagram sums.
We present a detailed study of magnetic reconnection in quasi-two-dimensional pulsed-power driven laboratory experiment. Oppositely directed fields ($B=3\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{T}$), advected by supersonic, sub-Alfv\'enic carbon plasma flows (${V}_{\mathrm{in}}=50\text{ }\mathrm{km}/\mathrm{s}$), are brought together and mutually annihilate inside thin current layer ($\ensuremath{\delta}=0.6\text{ }\mathrm{mm}$). Temporally spatially resolved optical diagnostics, including interferometry,...
We describe the use of a genetic algorithm to apply active feedback laser wakefield accelerator at higher power (10 TW) and lower repetition rate (5 Hz) than previous work. The temporal shape drive pulse was adjusted automatically optimize properties electron beam. By changing software configuration, different could be improved. This included total accelerated charge per bunch, which doubled, average energy, increased from 22 27 MeV. Using experimental measurements directly provide allows...
We have examined the absolute yield of keV x-rays emitted from gaseous plasmas created by intense irradiation large Xe clusters. find that >10 μJ x rays with photon energies above 1 are produced clustering gas targets when heated 250 mJ, 2 ps laser pulses at an intensity ∼1017 W/cm2. The yields show strong dependence and variation cluster size.

A new experimental platform was developed, based on the use of supersonic plasma flow from ablation stage an inverse wire array z-pinch, for studies shocks in magnetized high energy density physics plasmas a well-defined and diagnosable 1-D interaction geometry. The mechanism generation ensures that (ReM ∼ 50, MS 5, MA 8, Vflow ≈ 100 km/s) has frozen-in magnetic field at level sufficient to affect formed by its with obstacles. It is found addition expected accumulation stagnated thin layer...

We have studied the characteristics of x-ray emission in 12- range from plasmas produced by irradiation a target Xe clusters with picosecond laser pulses at intensities near . These exhibit strong Ni-like through to Mn-like Xe. find that strength and character spectra are very similar when either 1053 or 526 nm used heat clusters.
The results of a study the channeling intense picosecond laser pulses by discharge-ablated capillary waveguide are presented. peak-energy transmission for 10-mm-long is measured to be 65% an input intensity 1×1016 W cm-2. importance inverse bremsstrahlung, stimulated Raman scattering, Brillouin atomic modulation instabilities, and ionization discharge plasma as loss mechanisms both femtosecond considered.
We report on experimental investigations into strong, laser-driven, radiative shocks in cluster media. Cylindrical launched with several joules of deposited energy exhibit strong effects including rapid deceleration, preheat, and shell thinning. Using time-resolved propagation data from single-shot streaked Schlieren measurements, we have observed temporal modulations the shock velocity, which attribute to thermal cooling instability, a process is believed occur supernova remnants but until...
In a previous paper (Massey and Smith 1936) theoretical treatment of various processes formation negative ions in gases has been given. The recent experimental work Arnot (1936, 1937) has, however, shown the importance taking place at surface metal electrodes. purpose this is to give surfaces indicate where further research necessary order understand more fully place. When neutral atom captures an electron form ion, excess energy equal sum initial kinetic affinity must be disposed of. method...
Synopsis The results of a palynological study on late Llandovery–Wenlock (mid-Silurian) successions in the North Esk, Bavelaw Castle and Loganlee inliers Pentland Hills, Midland Valley Scotland, are documented. Palynological assemblages from Reservoir Formation dominated by acritarchs, but chitinozoa, cryptospores scolecodonts also present. Assemblages lower part low diversity abundance, marked increases both abundance diversity, particularly occur upper 200 m or so formation. reasons for...
We describe magnetic reconnection experiments using a new, pulsed-power driven experimental platform in which the inflows are super-sonic but sub-Alfv\'enic.The intrinsically magnetised plasma flows long lasting, producing well-defined layer that persists over many hydrodynamic time scales. The is diagnosed suite of high resolution laser based diagnostics provide measurements electron density, reconnecting field, inflow and outflow velocities ion temperatures.Using these we observe balance...
