The human finger is exquisitely sensitive in perceiving different materials, but the question remains as to what length scales are capable of being distinguished active touch. We combine material science with psychophysics manufacture and haptically explore a series topographically patterned surfaces controlled wavelength, identical chemistry. Strain-induced surface wrinkling subsequent templating produced 16 wrinkle wavelengths ranging from 300 nm 90 μm amplitudes between 7 4.5 μm....
The barrier functions of skin against water loss, microbial invasion and penetration xenobiotics rely, in part, on the spatial distribution biomolecular constituents structure, particularly its horny layer (stratum corneum). However, all layers are important to describe normal dysfunctional conditions, develop adapted therapies or care products. In this work, time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used image a variety...
It is known that roughness-smoothness, hardness-softness, stickiness-slipperiness and warm-cold are predominant perceptual dimensions in macro-, micro- nano- texture perception. However, it not clear to what extent active tactile discrimination remains intact with age. The general decrease ability induces physical emotional dysfunction elderly, has increasing significance for an aging population. We report a method quantify acuity based on blinded exploration of systematically varying...
The unique properties of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have led to their extensive use in consumer products, including ski wax. Based on the risks associated with PFAS, align PFAS regulations, international federation (FIS) implemented a ban products containing "C
This study investigates the neural and behavioral mechanisms of tactile perceptual discrimination using fMRI a set wrinkled surface stimuli with varying textures. Fifteen female participants were tasked distinguishing between different surfaces by touch alone. Behavioral results demonstrated variable discriminability across conditions, reflecting sensitivity human fingertips. Neural analysis showed varied brain activations tied to task's difficulty. In easiest least fine-grained condition,...
Rising consumer demands for safer, more natural, and sustainable topical products have led to increased interest in finding alternative excipients, while retaining functionality cosmetic appeal. Particle-stabilized Pickering creams emerged as possible alternatives replace traditional surfactant-stabilized are thus one of the focuses this study. The aim paper was study relationships between sensorial characteristics physical properties understand how different excipients affect these aspects,...
A range of surfaces coated with spherical silica particles, covering the size from nanometer to micrometer, have been produced using Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposition. The particles were characterized both in suspension and Langmuir trough optimize surface preparation procedure. By limiting particle aggregation layer failures during steps, well-defined monolayers a close-packed structure obtained for all sizes. Thus, this procedure led structured characteristic variation amplitude spatial...
Background The tactile perception is essential for all types of topical formulations (cosmetic, pharmaceutical, medical device) and the possibility to predict sensorial response by using instrumental methods instead sensory testing would save time cost at an early stage product development. Here, we report on evaluation method friction measurements estimate perceptual attributes formulations. Methods Friction was measured between index finger artificial skin substrate after application a...
Abstract The interaction of active substances with molecular structures in stratum corneum (SC) is crucial for the efficacy and safety cosmetic formulations topical drugs. However, architecture SC highly complex methods to unambiguously localize exogenous molecules within are lacking. Consequently, little known about distribution actives SC, proposed penetration mechanisms through typically limited simple diffusion via a tortuous (lipid only) or transverse (across corneocytes lipid matrix)...
Abstract Humans are extraordinarily skilled in the tactile evaluation of, and differentiation between, surfaces. The chemical mechanical properties of these surfaces translated into signals during haptic exploration by mechanoreceptors our skin, which specialized to respond different types temporal stimulation. Describing effects measurable physical characteristics on human response is great interest manufacturers household materials so that experience can be considered design, product...
Total fluorine was determined in 44 consumer product samples from the Swedish market which were either suspected or known to contain fluorinated polymers. Product categories included cookware (70-550 000 ppm F), textiles (10-1600 electronics (20-2100 and personal care products (10-630 F). To confirm that organic nature, deduce structure, a qualitative pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (pyr-GC/MS) method validated using suite of reference materials. When applied with unknown PFAS...

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether smooth surfaces varying in surface chemistry could be perceptually distinguished with the sense touch. A set ten glass prepared which varied systematically terms molecular composition a thin coating low topography. contact angle, angle hysteresis, and energy were evaluated as objective physical parameters characterizing each coating. Additionally, interaction forces between human finger different coatings quantified compared tactile friction...
Abstract Improving the tactile aesthetics of products that can be described as touch intensive is an increasing priority within many sectors, including furniture industry. Understanding which physical characteristics contribute to haptic experience a surface, and how, therefore highly topical. It has earlier been shown both friction topography affect perception. Thus, two series stimuli have produced using standard coating techniques, with systematic variation in (physical) roughness...
Tactile perception can be investigated through ex vivo friction measurements using a so-called ForceBoard™, providing objective assessments and savings in time money, compared to subjective human panel. In this work we aim compare excised skin versus VitroSkin® as model substrates for tactile measurements. A further is detect possible differences between traditional surfactant-based creams, particle-stabilized (Pickering) cream investigate how the different affect results obtained. It was...
The crucial barrier properties of the stratum corneum (SC) depend critically on design and integrity its layered molecular structure. However, analysis methods capable spatially resolved characterization SC are scarce fraught with severe limitations, e.g., regarding specificity or spatial resolution. Here, we used 3D time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry to characterize distribution skin lipids in corneocyte multilayer squams obtained by tape stripping. Depth profiles specific...
The oft discussed and fretted over environmental influences on hair have led to a popular consensus which suggests that elevated temperature humidity lead frizzier, wilder hair. However, few attempts at actually quantifying these effects been made. Although frizziness is usually perceived visually, here the influence of variations in tactile perception friction curly straight were investigated. It shown changes may disproportionately affect by touch due concurrent friction.
