This article outlines a network approach to the study of technological change. We propose that new inventions reshape networks interlinked technologies by shifting inventors’ attention or away from knowledge on which those build. Using this approach, we develop novel indexes extent invention consolidates destabilizes existing technology streams. apply these in analyses university research commercialization and find that, although federal funding pushes campuses create are more destabilizing,...
Drawing on insights from macro- and microlevel research, I develop test a theory of how the makeup firms' local environments influences their ability to generate innovations. propose that although geographic proximity industry peers can enhance performance, such effects are moderated by intraorganizational network structures. Data collaborations among inventors locations 454 US companies active in nanotechnology R&D between 1990 2004 used show as decreases—and knowledge spillovers become...
Regulators, much like market actors, rely on categorical distinctions. Innovations that are ambiguous to regulatory categories but not actors present a problem for regulators and an opportunity innovative firms. Using wide range of primary secondary, qualitative quantitative sources, we trace the history one class financial derivatives—interest rate foreign exchange swaps—to show how these instruments undermined separation commercial investment banking established by Glass–Steagall Act 1933...
Many firms attempt to manage their legal and regulatory environments by influencing policy makers. Typically, researchers have focused on how use nonmarket actions, including lobbying, campaign contributions, related activities, gain influence. We argue that may also change the effects of policies through market actions. Market actions lead both formal (i.e., transformations codified rules) interpretive rules without changes in form). identify two pathways which firms’ produce change:...
Novelty and impact are key characteristics of the scientific enterprise. Classic theories change distinguish among different types novelty emphasize how a new idea interacts with previous work influences future flows knowledge. However, even recently developed measures remain unidimensional, continued reliance on citation counts captures only amount, but not nature, impact. To better align theoretical empirical work, we attend to (new results, theories, methods) whether offering has...
Background Efforts to reduce racial disparities in total hip replacement (THR) have focused mainly on patient behaviors. While these efforts are no doubt important, they ignore the potentially important role of provider- and system-level factors, which may be easier modify. We aimed determine whether patterns interaction among physicians around THR episodes differ communities with low versus high concentrations black residents. Materials methods analyzed national Medicare claims from 2008...
Compared with white patients, black patients are more likely to undergo cardiac surgery at low-quality hospitals, even when they live closer high-quality ones. Opportunities for organizational interventions alleviate this problem remain elusive. To explore physician isolation in communities high proportions of residents as a factor contributing racial disparities access hospitals surgery.Using national Medicare data (2008-2011), we mapped social networks where coronary artery bypass grafting...
Background— Patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) must often see multiple providers dispersed across many care locations. To test whether teamwork (assessed with the bipartite clustering coefficient) among these physicians is a determinant of surgical outcomes, we examined national Medicare data from patients CABG. Methods and Results— Among beneficiaries who underwent CABG between 2008 2011, mapped relationships all treated them during their episodes, including both...
Objective To determine whether observed patterns of physician interaction around shared patients are associated with higher levels teamwork as perceived by physicians. Data Sources/Study Setting Michigan Medicare beneficiaries who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting ( CABG ) procedures at 24 hospitals in the state between 2008 and 2011. Study Design We assessed hospital using climate scale Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. After aggregating across discharges these hospitals, we mapped...
To reduce inefficiency and waste associated with care fragmentation, many current programs target greater clinical integration among physicians. However, these have led to only modest Medicare spending reductions. Most focus on formal integration, which often bears little resemblance actual physician interaction patterns. To examine how patterns vary between health systems assess whether variation in informal is delivery payments.National data from January 1, 2008, through December 31, 2011,...
Abstract Research Summary An extensive body of research examines concentration levels (i.e., “mass”) industry clusters; however, little attention is paid to their dynamics “motion”). Understanding cluster important because how clusters change over time may have implications for firm strategies and outcomes that are not attributable mass alone. To advance scholarship, we derive a theoretically grounded measure motion. Applying this data on establishments in the U.S. computer semiconductor...
While mixed methods research is increasingly used to examine determinants of unwarranted variability in healthcare delivery and outcomes, novel integrative approaches are required meet the needs research. This article describes refining strategies that enhance linkage between qualitative quantitative dimensions a study. Leveraging our study experiences, this paper demonstrates several strategies: (1) using mediated allocation concealment facilitate sampling; (2) informing inquiry through...
Previous literature offers conflicting findings on how the restrictiveness of regulatory environment—the amount rules that prohibit specific activities—affects innovation firms. One camp suggests circumscribes range available technological components and therefore decreases innovation. The other believes can lead firms to seek new alternative components, which could increase In this article, we develop a theory regulation reconcile these views, test using novel data federal regulations...

Background: Melanoma is the third most common cause of cancer and deadliest form skin among 17–39 year-olds in United States. a critical public health issue with substantial economic burden. Cases associated burdens, however, could be prevented greater awareness of, interventions related to, melanoma-related preventive behaviors. In fact, as social media use close to ubiquitous, it represents potential communication modality. However, more research needed understand current state information...
Just as regulation may inhibit innovation, innovation undermine regulation. Regulators, much like market actors, rely on categorical distinctions to understand and act the market. Innovations that are ambiguous regulatory categories but not actors present a problem for regulators an opportunity innovative firms evade or upend existing order. We trace history of one class financial derivatives—interest rate foreign exchange swaps—to show how these instruments under- mined separation...
Background: Accountable care organizations’ (ACOs’) focus on formal clinical integration to improve outcomes overlooks actual patterns of provider interactions around shared patients. Objective: To determine whether such informal relates a health system’s performance in an ACO. Research Design: We analyzed national Medicare data (2008–2014), identifying beneficiaries who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). After determining which physicians delivered them, we aggregated across...
Professional networks are vital for individuals’ career advancement. Research demonstrates, however, that women often disadvantaged in their access to such networks. Using a randomized field experiment at an IT conference, we found had worse networking outcomes than men. Relative men, met 42% fewer new contacts, spent 48% less time talking them, and added 25% LinkedIn connections. We theorize fields where underrepresented (e.g., IT) two barriers—search social—differentially affect men women....
