Prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE) is an uncommon yet dreadful complication in patients with prosthetic valves that requires a distinct analysis from native endocarditis. The present study aims to investigate independent risk factors for early surgical outcomes PVE. A retrospective cohort was conducted 8 Italian Cardiac Surgery Units January 2000 December 2013 by enrolling all PVE undergoing treatment. total of 209 consecutive were included the study. During period, global rate procedures...

Data of 9 years surgical activity (on about 10000 patients), obtained from the database our cardiac surgery care centre, were analysed to assess time-related variations in demographics, clinical and characteristics.Data patients submitted major procedures between 1999 2007 examined using chi-square test, analysis variance (ANOVA) test or non-parametric tests, where applicable. The 'linear-by-linear' association was used verify existence a trend. A value p<0.05 considered significant. In time...

Aims The clinical benefits of mitral valve repair over replacement in the setting infective endocarditis are not clearly established. Methods Data patients who underwent cardiac surgery for a 20-year period (2001–2021) at two centres were reviewed. Among them, 282 native and included study. Nearest-neighbour propensity-score matching was performed to account differences patients’ profile between subgroups. Results Mitral 186 patients, while 96 cases repair. Propensity match analysis provided...

A single-institutional study on atrial myxoma. Patient data and obtained from the survivors during follow-up were reviewed. We studied 109 patients (61.5% female) who underwent surgical excision of myxoma between January 1980 December 2005. Mean age at time surgery was 60 +/- 14 years (range 1-83 years). Overall survival recurrence determined by Kaplan-Meier analysis. Linearized rates are reported. One hundred two (93.6%) tumours found in left atrium. Comparative mean distribution revealed a...

Acute kidney injury after cardiac surgery (CS-AKI) is strongly associated with in-hospital mortality and morbidity. We aimed to investigate whether ‘early’ or ‘late’ initiation of renal replacement therapy (RRT) in patients CS-AKI a survival benefit more favourable outcomes. All who had undergone at ‘Ospedali Riuniti’ Ancona from July 2011 February 2013 were prospectively enrolled divided into two treatment groups: the approach was used during first 10 months, next months. ‘Early’ RRT...

Background: Although sutureless and rapid deployment aortic valve replacement (SURD-AVR) has been associated with an increased rate of permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation compared to conventional AVR (c-AVR), the predictors new conduction abnormalities remain be clarified. This study aimed identify risk factors for disorders in patients undergoing surgery. Methods: Data from 243 receiving minimally invasive were prospectively collected. SURD-AVR was performed 103 (42.4%) c-AVR 140...

Carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation was used by some devices for endoscopic vein harvest to create a subcutaneous tunnel and facilitate the harvest. In literature, cases of CO2 micro- macro-embolisms or hypercarbia during this procedure are described. The purpose study evaluate if use an open system rather than sealed might be associated with different absorption procedure. Patients were randomized into two groups: those patients in first group submitted using insufflation; second group,...

Median sternotomy incision has shown to be a safe and efficacious approach in patients who require thoracic aortic interventions still represents the gold-standard access. Nevertheless, over last decade, less invasive techniques have gained wider clinical application cardiac surgery becoming first-choice treat heart valve diseases, experienced centers. Aortic valve surgery has been undergone continuous development over the last years, involving less invasive techniques and use of new technologies to reduce traumatic impact intervention extend operability toward increasingly high-risk patients. Minimally aortic replacement (AVR) gradually recognized as a technique compared median sternotomy, becoming first choice approach in numerous experienced centers. Herein we present our multidisciplinary minimally for AVR, involving: (I) reduced chest...

A persistent left superior vena cava draining into the atrium may produce a symptomatic right-to-left shunt. Although intra-atrial rerouting techniques, in patients with no connecting vein, have proved to be reliable and successful, many cases extracardiac repair is preferable. We report case of 5-month-old patient not connected atrium, associated atrial septal defect partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection. The correction has been achieved by return transposition on right appendage.
