Abstract. We present observations of the 2010–2011 Arctic winter stratosphere from Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) onboard ENVISAT. Limb sounding infrared measurements were taken by MIPAS during Northern polar and into subsequent spring, giving a continuous vertically resolved view dynamics, chemistry stratospheric clouds (PSCs). adopted 2-D tomographic retrieval approach to account strong horizontal inhomogeneity atmosphere under vortex conditions,...
Measuring water vapor (WV) in the troposphere, where nearly all atmospheric WV is concentrated, critical for understanding composition and dynamics comprehensively. A particularly challenging issue conducting systematic measurements lower troposphere (approximately 5–6 km) on a global scale, as this would significantly enhance both climate modeling numerical weather prediction (NWP) capabilities over short time scales.Based theoretical studies conducted European Space Agency (ESA),...
Pollutants information can be retrieved from visible (VIS) and ultraviolet (UV) diffuse solar spectra exploiting Multi-AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) instruments. In May 2021, the Italian research institute CNR-ISAC acquired deployed a MAX-DOAS system SkySpec-2D. It is located in “Giorgio Fea” observatory San Pietro Capofiume (SPC), middle of Po Valley, where it has constantly zenith off-axis since 1st October 2021. The full mission Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument, on board European Space Agency ENVISAT satellite, is analyzed with Geofit Multi-Target Retrieval (GMTR) system to obtain MIPAS2D pressure, temperature volume mixing ratio MIPAS main targets H2O,...
The local chemical impact of sprites is investigated for the first time. This study motivated by current understanding streamer nature sprites: streamers are known to produce NO x , thus expected lead a enhancement background abundances, and possibly ozone. We adopted following strategy: middle atmosphere MIPAS/GMTR 2 satellite measurements were correlated with ground‐based WWLLN detections large tropospheric thunderstorms as proxy sprite activity. found no evidence any significant at global...
Abstract. Within the framework of second SPARC (Stratosphere-troposphere Processes And their Role in Climate) water vapour assessment (WAVAS-II), profile-to-profile comparisons stratospheric and lower mesospheric were performed by considering 33 data sets derived from satellite observations 15 different instruments. Abstract. The observations acquired during the full mission of Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) instrument, aboard European Space Agency Environmental Satellite (Envisat), have been analysed with version 8.22 Optimised Retrieval Model (ORM), originally developed as scientific prototype ESA level-2 processor MIPAS observations. results analyses included into 8 (level2-v8) database containing atmospheric fields pressure, temperature, and volume mixing ratio...
Abstract. We examine volume mixing ratios (vmr) retrieved from limb emission spectra recorded with the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) on board Envisat. In level 2 (L2) data products of three different retrieval processors, which perform one dimensional (1-D) retrievals, we find significant differences between species' profiles ascending and descending orbit parts. The relative vary systematically time year, latitude, altitude. lower stratosphere their...
Recent research on sprites shows these and other transient luminous events can exert a local impact atmospheric chemistry, although with minor effects at global scales. In particular, both modelling remote sensing work suggest perturbations to the background NOx up few tens of per cent occur above active sprite-producing thunderstorms. this study we present detailed investigation MIPAS/ENVISAT satellite measurements middle NO2 in regions high likelihood sprite occurrence during period August...
Abstract. Since 2011, the Global Energy and Water cycle Exchanges (GEWEX) Vapor Assessment (G-VAP) has provided performance analyses for state-of-the-art reanalysis satellite water vapour products to GEWEX Data Analysis Panel (GDAP) user community in general. A significant component of work undertaken by G-VAP is characterise quality uncertainty these records (i) ensure full exploitation (ii) avoid incorrect use or interpretation results. Observations from the Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) were analysed with two-dimensional GMTR retrieval system in order to obtain fields of ozone and several molecular species related chemistry: HNO3, N2O, NO2, N2O5, ClONO2, COF2, CFC-11 CFC-12. MIPAS measures mid-infrared emission atmosphere both during day at night time global coverage. Observing limb viewing geometries, instrument is able resolve finer vertical structures than nadir instruments, thus...
<p class="Default">MIPAS is a midinfrared Fourier Transform spectrometer that sounded the atmospheric emission at limb onboard ENVISAT satellite. It was launched on 31 March 2002 in sun-synchronous polar orbit of about 800 km altitude and operated until 8 April 2012. The scanning sequence observed by instrument made spectra sound atmosphere different tangent altitudes (the minimum reached line sight also from where most signal originates). inversion measurements allows determination...

We report the first measurement of isotopic partitioning between stratospheric H 14 NO 3 and 15 . The vertical distribution isotope ratio two isotopologues nitric acid was derived using ν 5 band Q branch that recently identified in measurements from MIPAS experiment newly generated spectral line parameters for minor isotopologue. Because very low intensity features adopted retrieval, we established an “ad hoc” inversion procedure based on a regularized linear Kalman filter approach. This...

Abstract. The information load (IL) analysis, first introduced for the two-dimensional approach (Carlotti and Magnani, 2009), is applied to inversion of MIPAS (Michelson Interferometer Passive Atmospheric Sounding) observations operated with a 1-dimensional (1-D) retrieval algorithm. IL distribution spectra shown be often asymmetrical respect tangent points permits us define preferential latitude where profiles retrieved 1-D algorithm should geo-located. Therefore, defining geo-location...
